Ms. King, here’s a pen container, a souvenir that we’ve specially prepared for you. Hopefully you’ll like it. This pen container is made of bamboo, which is evergreen and hollow inside so that in Chinese culture it’s a symbol of being young and modest. 【題目】At one time, the Iroquois Indians lived along the lakes and rivers of the northern part of New York. The five tribes (部落) — the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca — fought with each other for years.

In the late 1500s, a wise Iroquois man named Dekanawida had a dream. In his dream, he saw the end of the Indian wars.An Onondaga chief named Hiawatha agreed to help Dekanawida bring peace to the area.Hiawatha traveled from tribe to tribe, trying to persuade the tribal leaders to unite in peace. The leaders realized that if they stopped fighting, they could become a powerful force in the Northeast area.

The leaders of the five tribes set up a league, called the Iroquois League, which brought all five tribes together. They set up a kind of democratic (民主的) government in which each tribe had an equal voice.A Great Council was formed.Fortynine chiefs from every tribe were appointed to the Council. The members were all men, but they were chosen by the elder women of the tribes. The Council worked together to solve big issues for the league, while each tribe remained selfgoverning.

In 1722, the Iroquois League increased from five to six tribes when the Tuscarora tribe joined them. The Iroquois League controlled the fur trade in the area. They controlled land from Canada to Kentucky. The Iroquois League remained powerful for over 200 years.

Then during the War of Independence, most of the Iroquois League sided with the British. After the Americans defeated the British, many Iroquois villages were destroyed. The Iroquois were forced to move and live on reservations (印第安人居留地).This caused the Iroquois League to become less powerful.

History shows that the writers of the United States Constitution used some of the same ideas as the Iroquois League. One section of the Iroquois Constitution is entitled “Rights of the People” and might be compared to the “Bill of Rights”.The Iroquois League’s constitution is often called America’s first democracy.

【題目】Comments on the July Issue of Reader’s Digest

Jennie Gardner, Bath

I couldn’t agree more with Lee Child, that books are really important. Yes, you can get lost in them but you can also find yourself and new worlds and possibilities in them. Books help us to forget and remember. They remind us both of what's really important and what’s not.

And, as Lee says, they let us hold the whole world in our hands, We can feel the weight of this word, we can mark our favourite spots, add in our own thoughts and see our progress through the pages as the story leads us back home, allowing us to re-find ourselves along the way.

Jayne Wile, North Wales

Brian Blessed’s I Remember was most enjoyable. I love Brian, a popular actor of stage and screen. It was interesting to learn more about his life. I noted how he enjoyed being involved in the Space Program, doing 600 hours training in Moscow and I have to agree with his thought”We need to get out to Mars because the Earth has got to rest.” Mars has always been a source of inspiration for explorers and scientists.

Melanie Lodge, West Yorkshire

I was thrilled to read author Lee Childs If I Ruled The World. I was most impressed that he wanted to make teachers the most respected and highest paid professionals.

I work as a teaching assistant in a primary school and have done so since my youngest daughter began school 12 years ago. Until then I had no idea just how much planning was involved in each lesson and how much patience was required in a class of 30 children! I also agree with Lee that there’s nothing more rewarding than finishing a good book.

1What is Jennie Gardner’s comment mainly about?

A.Books make us get lost.B.Books mean a lot in life.

C.Books help us progress.D.Books bring us possibilities.

2What do we know about Jayne Wile?

A.He once got trained in Moscow.

B.He joined in the Space Program.

C.He thinks it necessary to explore Mars.

D.He’s a popular actor of stage and screen.

3What can be inferred from Melanie Lodge’s comment?

A.She better knows how to teach.

B.She thinks teachers are overpaid.

C.She finds teaching more rewarding.

D.She used to work in a primary school.

4Which of them have a similar opinion according to the passage?

A.Brian Blessed and Lee Child.

B.Jayne Wile and Jennie Gardner.

【題目】If you visit the new Mummies(木乃伊) show at the American Museum of Natural History(AMNH), in New York City, don’t miss the Gilded Lady. Scientists say she probably died of lung disease when she was in her 40s---about 2,000 years ago---in Egypt. They even have a model of her skull(頭骨). Based on that, an artist was sure how she may have looked when she was alive. And yet, the mummy’s coffin has never been opened. Instead, scientists used a machine called a CT scanner(掃描儀) to look inside.

CT scanners were developed to help doctors examine patients. But the machines turned out to be perfect for studying mummies, too.

“A hundred years ago, scientists would usually open mummies’ coffins. This did a great deal of harm to those mummies,” say AMNH president Ellen V. Futter. “We just don’t do that anymore. We can do so much better. By using CT scanners, scientists can know about an ancient person’s diet from some of a mummy’s hair. Pieces of bone can show who was related to whom.”

Some mummies in Peru were buried with a skull hanging from their neck. Scientists thought these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But DNA evidence showed that the mummies were buried with the skull of an ancestor(祖先).

The 19 mummies in the show are from Egypt and Peru. They had completely different reasons for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummification allowed an ancestor to live on in the next world. The people who prepared the Gilded Lady thought she would continue to see, hear, and smell. In ancient Peru, people practiced mummification to stay connected with their ancestors. Some families kept mummies in their home.

Futter calls the mummies in the show “messengers from another time.” With the help of technology, scientists will continue to uncover mummies’ secrets so we can understand it.

1What did scientists find about the Gilded Lady?

A. She was a great artist.

B. She died a natural death.

C. She lived in ancient Egypt.

D. She had an amazingly long life.

2What do Futter’s words suggest?

A. Pieces of bone show a person’s diet.

B. CT scanners do great harm to mummies.

C. Mummies usually wore the skull of an enemy.

D. Technology plays an important role in mummy studies.

3Why did the ancient Peruvians make mummies?

A. To do traditional medical research.

B. To keep close ties with their relatives.

C. To help their families live a better life.

D. To let their ancestors live in another world.

4What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. The technology.

B. Their message.

C. Their family.

D. The show.

【題目】 According to a team of researchers,an animal's ability to perceive(感知)time is linked to their pace of life.

“Our results lend support to the importance of time perception in animals where the ability to perceive time in a very short time may be the difference between life and death for fast moving creatures." commented lead author Kevin Healy from Trinity College Dublin.

The study was done with a variety of animals using phenomenon based on the maximum speed of flashes of light an individual can see before the light source is seen as constant. Dogsfor example, have eyes with a refresh rate higher than humans.

One example of this phenomenon at work, the authors say,is the housefly and its ability to avoid being hit. The research showed flies “observe motion in a shorter time than our own eyes can achieve"which allows them to avoid being hit.

Professor Graeme Ruxton of the University of St Andrews in Scotland, who worked jointly on the research projectsaid in a statement,“Having eyes that send updates to the brain at much higher frequencies than our eyes do is of no value if the brain cannot process that information equally quickly. Thusthis work highlights the impressive abilities of even the smallest animal brains. Flies might not be deep thinkers, but they can make good decisions very quickly. ”

In comparisonthe tiger beetle(虎甲蟲)runs faster than its eyes can keep up,basically becoming blindwhich requires it to stop periodically to re-evaluate its prey's(獵物)position.

Our results suggest that time perception offers an as yet unstudied dimension along which animals can specialize and there is considerable range to study this system in more detail.

1What is the research mentioned in the passage mainly about?

A.Pace of life of animals.B.Impressive abilities of animals.

C.Lifetime of small animals.D.Time perception of animals.

2What does Kevin Healy's comment mean in Para.2

A.The survival of fast moving animals relies on their ability to perceive time.

B.Animals with quicker pace of life have better perception of time.

C.The ability of animals to perceive time depends on their high moving speed.

D.Animals with poor ability of time perception have a shorter life.

3Why can houseflies avoid being hit?

A.They can think very deeply before they act.

B.They can process the information as quickly as they receive it.

C.They can fly much faster than their eyes can keep up.

D.They can send information to brain more quickly than to their eyes.

4What will a tiger beetle have to do to catch a moving prey

A.Slow down to gain its time perception.

B.Prevent itself from becoming blind.

C.Stop occasionally to spot the prey again.

D.Try to run as fast as it can.
