【題目】My daughter went to see The Wild One recently and she commented that Marlon Brando was wearing jeans so long ago. Of course he helped set the trend, so that got me thinking about the link between films and trends in fashion. Fashion and films have gone hand in hand for long. The Wild One is a good example: it appeared in 1954, starring Brando. Dressed in a black leather motorcycle jacket, leather cap and jeans, he created a look which is still considered “cool” today. Everyone from Madonna to middle-aged men is seen wearing the classic leather motorcycle jacket.

Another strong influence on fashion trends was Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring Audrey Hepburn. She made famous the simple black dress that looks perfect at either a cocktail party or just standing around an expensive department store like Tiffany’s with a pastry and coffee in your hand, as Audrey Hepburn does in the film. She looks so elegant, wearing simple but beautiful dresses, big dark glasses and a string of pearls around her neck. Audrey Hepburn still influences women’s fashion with her “Tiffany’s look”.

In more modem times, the film star Uma Thurman created a major fashion trend when she appeared in the film Pulp Fiction, made in 1994. Her style was very simple. Her black trousers, crisp white shirt and hair style was copied by women in the world.

Influencing fashion trends can often be about timing. The movie Memoirs of a Geisha came just in time to start a trend in Japanese fashion. It starred the Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, who wore beautiful silk kimonos (和服), and it won an Oscar for Costume Design. Many travel companies picked up on the trend and ran “geisha trips” to Japan. The film has also led to a regained interest in kimonos. It is now quite common to see young Japanese women wearing kimonos not just on traditional occasions, but at various social events. The fashion is also beginning to spread to Western countries.

1What is the best title of the passage?

A. Films and fashion. B. Stars’ fashion.

C. Influential films. D. Film cultures.

2Who will people associate Madonna wearing the leather motorcycle jacket with?

A. Zhang Ziyi. B. Audrey Hepburn.

3What is implied in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s according to the passage?

A. One can be active by wearing black.

B. One can be elegant by dressing simply.

C. One can be famous by looking perfect.

D. One can be stylish by eating at Tiffany’s.

4What does the film Memoirs of a Geisha lead to?

TFW is sometimes used along with a funny photo to describe your feelings, while FTW is a kind of internet cheer used to express happiness. 3 You can use this one before you tell someone what you think about something.

【題目】If you are like most international students, you are probably pretty comfortable reading and writing in English, but not as comfortable with listening and speaking in the language. 1

Make friends with American students. Many international students end up making friends with a lot of—or only—other international students. 2Hanging out with natives not only naturally pushes you to improve your spoken English, but also helps you pick up cultural and social information.

Learn from American friends. Tell your American friends that you are trying to improve your listening and speaking skills, and would like them to help you. If you pronounce a word incorrectly, or misuse an idiom, you want them to tell you. 3

Increase your knowledge. 4 If you have known about the topics that are likely to be discussed in conversation, you have a much better chance of understanding people when they talk, and of being able to express yourself well.

5 If you have to explain something to someone, you have a strong desire to pronounce everything as well as you can, and find other ways to explain yourself. Finally, this becomes a good habit. Many people have asked me how I learned to speak English fluently, and I think it is because of my being a math teacher in college for years.

A. I don't think this is a good idea.

B. You will learn much faster this way.

C. If possible, become a teacher at your school.

D. It's a win-win opportunity for international students.

E. Read books, keep up with news and watch popular shows and movies.

F. It's a good way to make some extra cash while improving your English.

G. Below are some tips to help you to improve your conversational skills.

【題目】Winters are long and unforgiving in North Dakota. The winter of 1996 was especially brutal. It was a hard time in my own life too, A neck injury had kept me flat in bed for nearly a year. “Just in time for Easter,” my husband, Dick, said. But how could I feel the joy when the snow was four feet deep and I had months of painful physical treatment ahead?

I was doing the dishes one day, feeling hopeless when there was a tap against the glass. It was a branch of the troublesome cottonwood (棉白楊).Back in the fall of 1979, it was a new subdivision (分支) then, an eight-foot stick. The people who’d briefly occupied the house before us had placed the pipe from the pump next to it. The earth was so wet that the poor thing had fallen down, most of its bare root system pointing skyward, and blowing hopelessly back and forth in the cold wind. Dick decided to pull it out one day, but I disapproved of it.

“Look at how hard it’s trying!” I said, pointing to the way it strongly kept hold of the earth. “It deserves a chance.”

Dick borrowed some tools. We packed dry soil around the tree and put up some stakes () into the ground, making it stand upright. That winter was still terrible. Surprisingly, in the spring my “rescue stick” put forth a few leaves, then with lots of branches. The year after that, we were able to remove the stakes. By the 1990s that little stick was a giant, towering over the house.

Now the tapping at the window continued, louder as the wind picked up, almost as though to tell me to look up. At last, I did. I caught ray breath. In the window against the icy blue sky, thousands and thousands of fresh red buds were waving in the wind.

The tree was bursting with life and I had a wonderful Easter.

1】【1What is the meaning of the underlined word “brutal” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. busy. B. hard.

C. long. D. warm.

2】【2How did Dick rescue the new subdivision?

A. By supporting the stick firmly.

B. By watering the stick regularly.

C. By distributing chemical fertilizer.

D. By gathering sticks day and night.

3】【3What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?

A. To inform us of the current condition of her cottonwood.

B. To imply that she’d spent the hardest time and felt hopeful.

C. To tell us that the tree had survived from the awful winter

D. To suggest what she was going to do for the coming festival.

4】【4Which of the following can serve as the main idea of the passage?

A. A friend in need is a friend indeed,

B. There is no garden without its weeds.

C. Success is the accumulation of sweat,

D. Where there is life, there is hope.
