The Chinese language differs from Western languages 1in that, instead of an alphabet, it uses characters which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. Chinese words are formed by putting together different characters. In many cases, a single character can also make up a word. The history of the Chinese language can be examined by looking at 2 這些漢字是如何發(fā)展的

Chinese writing began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese writing. After seeing the tracks of animals in the snow and observing that the appearance of each one was different, 3 he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified and others have been made more difficult over time. However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. 5 Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by combining two or more characters together

2how these characters developed

4Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects

故整句可以譯為how these characters developed 。

3本句“he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent different objects.”

Not all, characters, drawings of objects 。 Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects

5本句“Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by combining two or more characters together.此句中分詞表目的,意為為了...,故整句可譯為有時候為了表達(dá)概念/想法, 某些漢字由兩個或多個漢字組合而成。

【題目】A “Gap Year” is a period of time when a student takes a break before going to university. It is often spent traveling or working. It can give young people useful learning experiences and new skills. It's very popular in foreign countries.

Yuoki, a restaurant in Germany, is not your everyday all-you-can-eat buffet (自助餐). For starters, there isn't an actual buffet to fill your plate. Instead, customers are seated at a table and provided with iPads which they can use to order up to five small dishes every ten minutes. They can eat as much as they want for 120 minutes, but having the food served at short intervals (間隔) allows diners to constantly assess how hungry they are and order accordingly, preventing food waste. Also, the owner, Luan Guoyu, believes, “our eyes are bigger than our stomach”, so not being able to see the cooked food at the buffet prevents people from ordering more food than they can actually eat.

But Luan Guoyu's most effective way of fighting food waste, and the one that has attracted media attention, is his 1 ($1.15) fine for food still left on the plate. “It’s called ‘ all-you-can-eat’ ” he says, adding that the extra charge is not meant to increase his income, but to act as a warning against wasting food.

Luan Guoyu's system is unique in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg, but not in Germany. Okinii, a Japanese-style restaurant in Dusseldorf, has also been charging customer, the same 1 tax for unfinished food on their plates since 2013.

With so many people living on the edge of their nations, and food waste becoming a serious problem in developed countries, it will be interesting to see if more restaurants will start carrying out the “eat up or pay up” policy. Even if they give the money from this fine to charity, it would still help them to save money in dealing with waste, so it's a win for everyone.

1What does the underlined word “assess” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

A. Doubt. B. Realize.

C. Judge. D. Compare.

2What will Luan Guoyu do when people can’t finish the food on their plates?

A. He will charge them extra money.

B. He will advise them to eat up the food.

C. He will ask them to take the food away.

D. He will warn them to order less food next time.

3What is the text mainly about?

A. Various German restaurants.

B. The seriousness of food waste.

C. Secrets of managing a restaurant.

D. Special ways to fight food waste.

4What does the author think of the “eat up or pay up” policy?

A. Unfair. B. Funny.

C. Reasonable. D. Doubtful.

Restaurants in Miami Beach

Steve’s Pizza

So many pizza chains compete for the attention of tourists in South Beach, but ask a Miami Beach local where to get the best pizza and they’ll tell you about Steve’s. This is New York style pizza, handmade with care and good ingredients(成分). New branches of Steve’s Pizza are opening elsewhere in Miami, all in non-tourist areas.

Opening hours: 11 a.m.-10a.m.

Cattleman’s Steakhouse

This place is 20 miles east of the city, but local folks would probably drive 200 miles to eat here. The food is good, and the scenery is even better. Come early and wander around the grounds of Indian Cliffs Ranch, where you’ll see everything from rabbits to buffalo (水牛), then catch the sunset either before or after your meal.

Opening hours: 5p.m.-10p.m.

Absolute Baking & Café

The screen door is always swinging open at this town hot spot with giant breakfasts. Try the green chili on eggs – it’s made from scratch, as are the organic(有機(jī)的) breads. Lunch includes salads, big sandwiches and local grass-fed beef burgers. Don’t miss a square of soft, fresh carrot cake.

Opening hours: 7a.m.-2p.m.

Walt’s Wharf

Everybody’s favorite for fresh fish (some drive in from LA). Walt’s packs them in on weekends. You can’t make reservations for dinner (though they’re accepted for lunch), but it’s worth the wait for the tree fire–grilled seafood and steaks in the many-windowed ground floor or upstairs in captain’s chairs.

Opening hours: 11a.m.-10:30p.m.

1The new branches of Steve’s Pizza are mainly intended for ______.

A. New Yorkers B. tourists

C. the locals D. foreigners
