解答 Your letter reached me yesterday. You would like me to tell you something about California,so now I am writing to you.
California, the third largest state in size in the USA with a population of more than 38 million,is located in the west of the United States on the Pacific in the west.It is said that the first settlers were Indians who got there 15000 years ago and only in the 16th century did Europeans come to settle. In the 19th century, people from all over the world came rushing into California with the dream of becoming rich.It is believed that in the future more people, attracted by the climate and lifestyle, will keep immigrating to California. As for language, only 58% of Californians speak English as their native language, while the others speak other languages.

13.Under the extreme conditions of a disaster, human beings display the best and worst they are capable of.In the midst of chaos,"women and children first"is the traditional way of doing
things.
When the Titanic sank, the stories of the courage mainly shown in the face of death moved the world.Sixty years before that, the passengers of another ship had shown even greater discipline and nobility(高尚的品格)in a terrible situation.
The ship was the Birkenhead,a steam-powered troopship transporting British troops to South Africa. On 26 February,1852,the ship hit an uncharted rock while rounding the Cape of Good Hope. There were about six hundred and eighty on board,of whom fifty were women and children. The remainders were soldiers and officers of the 74th Highlanders, led by Major Alexander Sexton. In addition, the ship was loaded with horses.
The collision(磋撞)had already caused dozens of the troops to drown as they slept below the deck.Major Sexton ordered the survivors on deck, and in one of the more remarkable displays of courage seen, the soldiers stood silently to attention as the women and children were loaded into the life-boats.The ship was sinking rapidly and leaning, but they continued to stand until all the women and horses were driven over-board to give them a chance.Only then,at the order from Major Sexton, did they break ranks and try to save their own lives. But the ship broke up,and four hundred and eighty-eight of the soldiers died.
In complete opposition to this bravery, was the occasion when nearly all the casualties were women and children. This happened on l April,1873.The White Star liner Atlantic, under the command of the incompetent Captain Williams, was wrecked on rocks off the coast of Nova Scotia.Williams, who knew the dangers of the area, had refused to consult charts or maps and had become utterly lost in the bad weather. In the panic, the male passengers deserted their families and tried to escape ashore.Their behavior was shocking. There were five hundred and sixty deaths.Of the four hundred survivors, not one was a woman.

79.Which of the following is true about the Birkenhead?B
A.She hit a rock and sank immediately.
B.The crew escaped after the women and children.
C.All the survivors were soldiers, officers and horses.
D.Half of the people on board were women and children.
80.What does the underlined word"casualties"probably mean?D
A.Survivors.B.Soldiers,C.Crew.D.Deaths.
81.What caused the White Star Liner Atlantic's collision?A
A.The bad weather.
B.The uncharted rock,
C.The people on board.
D.The inexperienced captain.
82.What is the best title of this passage?A
A.The Best and the Worst
B.The Meaning of Nobility

7.Raised in a fatherless home,my father was extremely tightfisted towards us children.His attitude didn't soften as I grew into adulthood and went to college.I had to ride the bus whenever I came home.Though the bus stopped about two miles from home,Dad never met me,even in sever weather.If I grumbled,he'd say in his loudest father-voice,"That's what your legs are for!"
The walk didn't bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads.I also felt less than valued that my father didn't seem concerned about my safety.But that feeling was canceled one spring evening.
It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs.I longed for home.When the bus reached the stop,I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.
A row of hedge(樹(shù)籬)edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house.Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey,I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home.On that particular evening,the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge,moving toward the house.Upon closer observation,I realized it was the top of my father's head.Then I knew,each time I'd come home,he had stood behind the hedge,watching,until he knew I had arrived safely.I swallowed hard against the tears.He did care,after all.
On later visits,that spot of gray became my watchtower.I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery.Upon reaching home,I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair."So!My son,it's you!"he'd say,his face lengthening into pretended surprise.
I replied,"Yes,Dad,it's me.I'm home."
