【答案】Dear Sir or Madam,
I am Li Hua from Class One, Senior Two. As far as I am concerned, I believe to teach English for pupils from Lantian Hope School will be good for both the primary-school students and high-school student tutors, which thus will result in substantial social benefits.
I think I am qualified for being the pupils’ English coach, because I have good character, and I’m independent in life and proficient in English. That’s why I apply for the position. I hope I can join the instructive activity.
My plan for coaching the pupils is to teach them by listening, speaking, reading and writing. What’s more important is to stimulate their interests in learning English as a foreign language, creating a good learning environment. I hope you can offer the opportunity.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

【題目】I was in a charity shop looking at the second hand books. It just so happened that the book shelves were next to the toy section. After a few minutes I became aware of a group of women standing behind me.They were poorly dressed and spoke in what sounded like an eastern European language. As they looked through the clothes rails a little girl, about three years old, came over to the toy section.Immediately her attention was caught by a toy pram(嬰兒車). What is it about little girls and toy prams? I don't know, but whatever it is its incredibly cute! She spoke to her mother and,in halting English her mother asked the shop assistant how much it cost.Three pounds was the answer---about five dollars. The mum looked down at her child, perhaps calculating what she still had to buy and how much money she would have left. Then she simply shook her head. The child didn't react badly as some might.Being told“no”was obviously not a new experience for her.But she couldn't keep the disappointment from her face. I had the grand total of four pounds in my pocket, two two-pound coins.A moment later I tapped the mother on the shoulder, pointed to the coins which I had left in the pram and said,“Buy her a dolly too.” I didn't hang about to see the end result. After all,it's not about being thanked.I made my way out of the shop and into the sunshine. The money was an investment in the happiness of the world. Was there any better way,I wondered,to get so much happiness for so little money than to buy a little girl a toy pram? And a dolly to sit in it!

1What did the little girl say to her mother according to the second paragraph?

A. She asked her mother to calculate her money.

B. She asked her mother to buy the toy pram for her.

A. she thought the toy wasn’t worth the money

B. she found it difficult to calculate her money

C. she found she didn’t take enough money with her

D. she thought the toy was not suitable for her daughter

3It can be inferred from the third paragraph that ________.

A. the girl usually behaved badly

B. the mother usually treated her daughter badly

C. the mother was not rich enough to meet her daughter’s need often

D. the little girl was often refused because she asked for too many toys

4What words can be used to describe the author?

C. Wealthy and healthy. D. Sympathetic and helpful.

【題目】Passenger pigeons (旅鴿)once flew over much of the United States in unbelievable numbers.

Written accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries described flocks ()so large that they darkened the sky for hours.

It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point ,there were more than 3 billlion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world. Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller, a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati.

Sadly the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were

most abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands.

Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.

By the closing decades of the 19th century ,the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans need for wood, which scattered (驅(qū)散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and storms contributed to their decline. Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again.

In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons but by then,

no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United

States was shot by a boy in Pike County, Ohio, in 1900. For a time , a few birds survived under human

care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on

September 1, 1914.

1In the 18th and early 19teh centuries, passenger pigeons____.

A. were the biggest bird in the world

B. lived mainly in the south of America

C. did great harm to the natural environment

D. were the largest bird population in the US

2The underlined word “ undoing” probably refers to the pigeons’ ____.

A. escape B. ruin

C. liberation D. evolution

3What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons?

A. To seek pleasure. B. To save other birds.

C. To make money. D. To protect crops.

4What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan?

A. It was ignored by the public. B. It was declared too late.

C. It was unfair. D. It was strict.

【題目】In Antarctica, you learn not to take anything for granted. Everything people depend on has to be shipped or flown into the continent. Why? There are no farms on the icy continent. There are certainly no cows, pigs or chickens. As for drinking water, special systems and a great deal of energy are needed to take the salt out of seawater to make it useable.

Then there is the matter of waste. The US Antarctic Program is committed (致力于) to reducing its impact- or footprint--on the Antarctic environment. That means that every bit of garbage a person might produce in a day has to be transported off the continent. That's true whether it's the wrapper from your candy bar, the green beans you didn't want to eat or the paper towels you used to wipe your hands,

McMurdo Station has put into place technology that helps it reduce its footprint. It starts with energy. The US research base has partnered its nearby neighbor, New Zealand's Scott Base, to share energy produced from three large wind turbines. Scott Base gets 100% of its power from wind, says Ron Blevins, manager at a power plant, while the American base gets about 35% of its energy from wind. The much larger US base uses oil-fired generators(發(fā)電機(jī)) to supply the rest of its energy needs. The waste heat produced by the generators is then used to warm many of its buildings.

The McMurdo base also has a wastewater treatment plant. Yubecca Bragg, an organic farmer, manages the treatment plant. Bragg explains that treatment depends on allowing microorganisms(微生物) to break down the waste until the liquid part of the waste can be safely released into the ocean. Between 150, 000 and 180,000 pounds a year of the remaining solid waste is packed into containers and sent back to the US.

1We can learn from the first paragraph that .

A. farmers have to raise cows in Antarctica

B. people like taking the ships in Antarctica

C. it is not easy to live in Antarctica

D. water in Antarctica is useless at all

2How do people in Antarctica deal with the solid garbage?

A. They have it taken away later. B. They wrap it in the paper towels.

C. They ignore it completely. D. They keep it in the dustbins.

3It can be inferred from Ron Blevins’ words that .

A. the US base gets its most energy from wind

B. the US base doesn't need too much energy

C. Scott Base tries to remove its footprint

D. New Zealand's technology is advanced

4Which of the following is harmful to the environment of Antarctica?

A. The large wind turbine. B. An oil-fired generator.

C. A wastewater treatment plant. D. Scott Base's power plant.

【題目】Do you know how it is when you see someone yawn and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently it's because we have mirror neurons (神經(jīng)元)in our brains.
Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains imitate (模仿)it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.
Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to use languages, and to understand how other people feel. Researchers have found that mirror neurons relate strongly to language. A group of researchers discovered that if they gave people sentences to listen to (for example: "The hand took hold of the ball"), the same mirror neurons were triggered as when the action was actually performed (in this example, actually taking hold of a ball).
Any problems with mirror neurons may well result in problems with behavior. Much research suggests that people with social and behavioral problems have mirror neurons which are not fully functioning. However, it is not yet known exactly how these discoveries might help find treatments for social disorders.
Research into mirror neurons seems to provide us with even more information concerning how humans behave and interact(互動).Indeed, it may turn out to be the equivalent (相等物)for neuroscience of what Einstein's theory of relativity was for physics. And the next time you feel the urge to cough in the cinema when someone else does—well, perhaps you'll understand why.

1Mirror neurons can explain _____.

A. why we cry when we are hurt

B. why we cough when we suffer from a cold

C. why we smile when we see someone else smile

D. why we yawn when we see someone else stay up late

2The underlined word "triggered" in the third paragraph probably means “____”.

A. set off B. cut off C. built up D. broken up

3We can learn from the passage that mirror neurons _____.

A. relate to human behavior and interaction

B. control human physical actions and feelings

C. result in bad behavior and social disorders

D. determine our knowledge and language abilities

4What is the passage mainly about?

A. Ways to find mirror neurons.

B. Problems of mirror neurons.

C. Existence of mirror neurons.

D. Functions of mirror neurons.
