【題目】Even now, almost a year after their astonishing act of group heroism, the dozens of people who risked their lives to save two boys from drowning in Panama City Beach, are still remembered.

The story began on July 8, 2017. Members of the Ursrey family, eight in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach. As the sun sank lower on the horizon(地平線), the two boys—Noah, 11, and Stephen, 8—took their skateboards and walked into the waves without the grown-ups noticing. When the boys were about 70 yards from shore, they realized that the ocean pulled them out to sea. After trying and failing to paddle(涉水)back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had clocked out for the evening.

The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Brittany and Tabatha Monroe, a married couple from Georgia, wandered by. They didn’t see the boys at first, but they heard them.

They jumped into the water and easily reached the brothers, who were still in fairly shallow water. The woman reassured the frightened boys and seized their skateboards, telling them they would be safe and then discovered that they, too, were now in a world of trouble. They couldn’t get back to shore and could barely and only occasionally hit the sandy bottom with their feet. After a few minutes, it was clear to the woman that they were all trapped in a terrible whirlpool.

Then scores of tourists were walking to them, hand in hand, forming a line. Soon the first person held the woman’s hand. In turn, her husband and the two boys joined her. The long line moved slowly until they were back to the safety of the beach.

The rescuers call it the Human Chain. But it was the deeply “human” aspect of the rescuers’ cooperation(合作)that made it so astonishing and successful.

1What happened to the two boys?

A. They got into deep sea by chance. B. They couldn’t be seen in the sea.

C. They went out without supper. D. They met with danger in the sea.

2What does the underlined word “reassured” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Saved. B. Comforted. C. Congratulated. D. Accompanied.

3Which of the following best describes the water the young couple stayed in?

A. It appeared calm on the surface. B. It was very deep.

C. It was mixed with sand. D. It moved fast.

4What made the four persons in the sea escape the risky situation?

A. Team spirit. B. Confidence. C. Good luck. D. Bravery.

1推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段中After trying and failing to paddle(涉水)back, they started waving and screaming for help.和第三段中The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Brittany and Tabatha Monroe, a married couple from Georgia, wandered by.可知,這兩個男孩在海上遇到了危險。故選D。

2詞義猜測題。根據(jù)第四段中The woman reassured the frightened boys and seized their skateboards, telling them they would be safe and then discovered that they, too, were now in a world of trouble. 這名女子向受驚的男孩們保證,并抓住他們的滑板,告訴他們他們將是安全的,然后發(fā)現(xiàn)他們也在一個麻煩的世界里。由此推知劃線詞的意思是使得到安慰,故選B。

【題目】Science is always advancing over time. A self-driving car from the Google may be coming to a street near you. However, you won’t be able to buy it now. “We’re working to build the world’s most experienced driver,” Kraft, director of the project, said. “Everything that we learn in one of our cars gets passed to all of our cars. But you may need to get over the idea of traditional car ownership along the way.”

Google’s software has already driven 5 million miles in U.S. cities, including an “early rider” test in Phoenix last April. Since then Google has grown confident enough to remove the “auxiliary wheel”: a human “safety driver”. Powering the vehicle’s self-driving functions is a series of cameras, radars and sensors on the car’s roof, which detect everything nearby from other vehicles and passers-by to cyclists.

Kraft stressed that Google’s cars aren’t connected—they don’t need a 5G wireless link to go anywhere. “The car has everything it needs to drive on the car itself.” He said, “There are no signals coming from outer space or something telling it to turn right.” The resulting ride may not be too exciting but safe. Kraft added. “We can see three football fields down the road, we would come to a stop before we ran into these crowds.”

Google’s system has a major advantage over the semi-autonomous(半自主的)systems of Tesla and Cadillac, both of which need continued human attention. Kraft said Google plans to have service in every major city by 2028 with thousands of cars driving themselves.

1What does the underlined words “auxiliary wheels” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. A car that is very old.

B. A driver who has been trained well.

C. A part of a car used to sound the alarm.

D. A condition where a driver doesn’t know his role.

2Why is Google’s car thought to be safe in the text?

A. Because it can get away from danger easily.

B. Because it is equipped with 5G wireless link.

C. Because it can stop before the crowds occasionally.

D. Because it can keep a safe distance from everything nearby.

3What can we learn from the text?

A. Google’s software has not been tested.

B. Google’s cars have not been put into the market.

C. Driving the Google’s car may not be too exciting.

D. Google’s cars still need driver’s attention all the way.

4What does the author think of the Google’s car?

A. It’s affordable.

B. It’s still a theory.

C. It has a bright future.

D. It’s the most advanced by now.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容寫一篇60詞左右的內(nèi)容概要。

We already know that the underwater world is anything but silent. It is full of natural sounds produced by animals and by the motion of the atmosphere and water. But today’s researchers are increasingly concerned about the man-made noises under the water. They are confusing whales and other marine animals

Although hearing is important to all animals, the special qualities of the undersea world emphasize the use of sound. Underwater sound allows marine animals to gather information and communicate at great distances and from all directions. Loud underwater noises can cause damage to their hearing. And nowadays it's becoming too much for marine wildlife. Evidence shows that whales will swim hundreds of miles, rapidly change their depth, and even beach themselves to get away from the sounds of sonar.

You might think lower noises, typically caused by shipping or construction, do not pose a threat to marine animals. In fact, while they may not kill the animals directly, they can disturb their ability to locate food, find mates and avoid predators (掠食動物)).Scientists looked at the effects of noise from small motorboats on coral-reef fish at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. In the lab, the fish had been trained to recognize the smell of three common predators as a threat. Some fish were trained in the presence of boat noise, while the others had training with the natural sounds of the ocean. It turned out that the first group showed no fright reactions when exposed to the predator. However, the other group was scared. And under the influence of underwater noise on this group, only 20 percent of fish survived, compared to almost 70 percent of unexposed fish.

Humans rely on the ocean for its natural resources and biodiversity. The ocean also plays an important role in regulating( 調(diào)節(jié))temperatures, As Cousteau said, "For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it.
