3.Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships.For example,in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure.Yet it also has other uses.A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child.A smile may show love or politeness.It can also hide true feelings.It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures.For example,many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper.Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities).Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don't smile enough.In Southeast Asian culture,a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings.Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions (情感),but we should not attempt to"read"people from another culture as we would"read"someone from our own culture.The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions.Rather,there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressiveness permitted.For example,in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do.When with friends,Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.
It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States.People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others.The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different.If we judge according to our own cultural habits,we may make the mistake of"reading"the other person incorrectly.

49.What does the smile usually mean in the U.S.?C
A.Love.
B.Politeness.
C.Joy.
D.Thankfulness.
50.The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile canB.
A.show friendliness to strangers
B.be used to hide true feelings
C.be used in the wrong places
D.show personal habits
51.What should we do before attempting to"read"people?B
A.Learn about their relations with others.
B.Understand their cultural backgrounds.
C.Find out about their past experience.
D.Figure out what they will do next.
52.What would be the best title for the test?C
A.Cultural Differences
B.Smiles and Relationship
C.Facial Expressiveness
D.Habits and Emotions.

13.Agricultural experts met in Ethiopia last week to discuss ways to help sub-Saharan Africa become a major producer of wheat.The area traditionally produced little wheat,while North Africa was the grain basket.
Wheat production fell sharply in sub-Saharan countries during the 1980s.In the 1960s,attempts were made to grow wheat in sub-Saharan Africa,including South Africa and Zimbabwe.But those countries found it was less costly to import wheat from Europe and the United States.Another problem is that Africa's wheat farms were often far from population centers.There also were transportation issues.And some lowlands were not a good place to grow wheat.
Hans Joachim Braun,one of the experts,says now is a good time to increase wheat production.In the last four years we have seen three major price hikes,where the wheat price and other staple process (主食加工)exploded.And that puts a big,big bill on countries which are depending on wheat imports,and Africa is the biggest wheat importer.
He also says demand for wheat in sub-Saharan Africa is growing faster than for any other crop.With higher income people would like to have more diversified(多樣化)food.But that is possible not the most important one.The most important one is that there is a tremendous migration(移民)of in particular male labor to the cities.And wheat products are convenient food because you can easily buy it.It's easy to process and you also can store it for a few days,which is different from some of the maize and rice products.
There are three possible challenges for growing more wheat in Africa:climate change,disease and pests,like insects.Mr.Braun says rising temperatures should not have a major effect on wheat.In fact,he says,it could help wheat grow in areas with high rainfall totals.As for fighting disease and pests,experts suggest growing more resistant crops.In addition,railroads and roads would have to be improved so large amounts of wheat could be moved to large markets.

39.What does the word"hikes"in Paragraph 3probably refer to?B
A.big changes
B.large increases
C.long trips
D.big bills
40.Wheat price exploding indicatesA.
A.sub-Saharan countries need to increase wheat production badly
B.sub-Saharan countries have to issue more money
C.sub-Saharan countries should grow more Corn
D.importing much wheat is urgent
41.Why is there a higher demand for wheat in sub-Saharan Africa?C
A.Because the number of hungry people there is increasing.
B.Because higher income people have the diversified need of food.
C.Because male labor are crowding into the cities.
D.Because the wheat price is lower.
42.According to Mr.Braun the main challenges for growing more wheat in Africa areD.
A.climate change and disease
B.resistant crops and climate change
C.rising temperatures and disease and pests
D.disease and pests and inconvenient transportation.

20.Traditional businessmen feel worried that growing e-commerce will reduce their share of the market.
According to a survey,90% of some people's purchases are made on the computer.As they find that by being able to go online and choose the things that they need to choose,and have them delivered right to their doorsteps,they could no longer be bothered with driving,the crowds,the noise of that,and they usually get a better selection.
Cornell University Marketing Professor,McLaughlin says traditional stores can keep their customers by offering goods like clothing,which customers may want to see and try on before purchasing,as well as items that are difficult to ship.He says some traditional stores are also pleasing customers with services that set up or repair computers and electronics.
Traditional stores also offer a social experience that some shoppers enjoy.There is still a lot of emotion in the buying decision that takes place.Oftentimes,you need that last sense of"this is exactly what I want"before you part with money.And you can't always get that online.It's a rather cold process.
Traditional stores can also deliver goods more quickly than online retailers(零售商).And smart businessmen are using stores to guide customers to websites and using their websites to encourage customers to visit their stores.
As more and more people have Internet access and smart phones, online commerce is likely to continue its growth here in the United States and in other countries

64.Traditional businessmen feel upset becauseD.
A.consumers can get a better selection by shopping online

17.It all began with a stop at a red light.
Kevin Salwen was driving his 14-year-old daughter,Hannah, back from a sleepover in 2006 While waiting at a traffic light, they saw a black Mercedes Coupe on one side and a homeless man begging for food on the other.
"Dad,if that man had a less nice car, that man there could have a meal,"Hannah protested. The light changed and they drove on,but Hannah was too young to be reasonable. She pestered (糾纏)her parents about inequity, insisting that she wanted to do something.
"What do you want to do?"her mom responded."Sell our house?"
Warning!Never suggest a grand gesture to an idealistic teenager.Hannah seized upon the idea of selling the luxurious family home and donating half the proceeds to charity, while using the other half to buy a more modest replacement home.
Eventually, that's what the family did.The project-crazy,impetuous (魯莽的) and utterly inspiring-is written down in detail in a book by father and daughter scheduled to be published next month:"The Power of Half."It's a book that, frankly,I'd be nervous about leaving around where my own teenage kids might find it.An impressionable child reads this, and the next tiling you know your whole family is out on the street.
At a time of enormous needs in Haiti and elsewhere, when so many Americans are trying to help Haitians by sending everything from text messages to shoes, the Salwens offer an example of a family that came together to make a difference-for themselves as much as the people they were trying to help.In a column a week ago,It described neurological (神經(jīng)學(xué)的)evidence from brain scans that unselfishness lights up parts of the brain normally associated with more primary satisfaction. The Salwens'experience confirms the selfish pleasures of selflessness.
Mr.Salwen and his wife,Joan, had always assumed that their kids would be better off in a bigger house. But after they downsized, there was much less space to retreat to,so the family members spent more time around each other.A smaller house unexpectedly turned out to be a more family-friendly house.

D.Don't respond to a child's demands firmly without consideration
53.What can we learn from the last paragraph?B
