A wolf was almost dead with hunger.A housedog saw him,and asked,"Friend, your irregular life will soon ruin you".Why don't you work steadily as I do,and get your food regularly?""I would have no objection,"said the wolf,"if I could only get a place.""I will help you,"said the dog."Come with me to my master, and you shall share my work."So the wolf and the dog went to the town together. On the way the wolf saw that there was no hair around the dog's neck.He felt quite surprised, and asked him why it was like that?"Oh,it is nothing,"said the dog."Every night my master puts a collar around my neck and chains me up.You will soon get used to it.""Is that the only reason?"said the wolf."Then good-bye to you,my friend.I would rather be free."

Two men were traveling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the Bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over,he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he could. The Bear soon left him,for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other Traveler descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the Bear had whispered in his ear."He gave me this advice,"his companion replied."Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger."

A prince had some monkeys trained to dance.Being naturally good at learning, they showed themselves excellent pupils, and in their rich clothes and masks, they danced as well as any of the courtiers.Their performance was often repeated with great applause, till on one occasion a courtier, bent on mischief, took from his pocket a handful of nuts and threw them upon the stage. The monkeys at the sight of the nuts forgot their dancing and became (as indeed they were) monkeys instead of actors.Pulling off their masks and tearing their robes, they fought with one another for the nuts. The dancing spectacle thus came to an end in the laughter and ridicule of the audience.

17.Social networking websites are causing alarming changes in the brains of young users,a famous scientist has warned.Sites such as Facebook,Twitter and Bebo are said to shorten attention spans (幅度),encourage instant satisfaction and make children more self-centered.
Warnings from neuroscientist (神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)科學(xué)家) Susan Greenfield will disturb the millions whose social lives depend on surfing their favorite websites each day.But they will strike a chord (弦) with parents and teachers who complain that many teenagers lack the ability to communicate or concentrate away from their screens.
More than 150million use Facebook to keep in touch with friends,share photographs and videos and post regular updates of their movements and thoughts.A further six million have signed up to Twitter,the"micro-blogging"service that lets,users exchange text messages about themselves.But while the sites are popular and extremely profitable,a growing number of psychologists and neuroscientists believe they may be doing more harm than good.
Baroness Tarot,an Oxford University neuroscientist believes repeated exposure could rewire the brain.Computer games and fast-paced TV shows were also a factor,she said."My fear is that these technologies are weakening the brain to the state of small children who axe attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights,who have a small attention span and live for the moment.""I often wonder whether real conversation in real time may eventually give way to these easier and faster screen dialogues,in much the same way as killing and butchering an animal to eat has been replaced by the convenience of packages on the supermarket shelf,"she said.
Psychologists have also argued that digital technology is changing the way we think.They point out that students no longer need to plan their term papers before starting to write-thanks to word processors they can edit as they go along.
A study by the Broadcaster Audience Board found teenagers now spend seven and a half hours a day in front of a screen.Educational psychologist Jane Healy believes children should be kept away from computer games until they are seven.Most games only excite the"flight or fight"areas of the brain,rather than the areas responsible reasoning.
Sue Palmer,author of Toxic Childhood,said:"We are seeing children's brain development damaged because they don't engage in the activity they have engaged in for thousands of years.I'm not against technology and computers.But before they start social networking,they need to learn to make real relationships with people."

16.Over two hundred years ago,Adam Smith introduced some ideas which brought about a world revolution.If we enjoy a high standard of living in modem society,we owe much to this Scottish economist and philosopher.If we enjoy driving in beautiful cars,wearing fashionable shoes,or flying away to distant places for exciting holidays,we should perhaps pay thanks to the man who made it all possible.
What was Adam Smith's contribution?Like so many ideas which have surprising effects,his was a simple one.He watched workers practicing their craft(工藝) of pi11making.One man would heat the strip of metal,stretch it out,cut off a suitable length,shape it,cool it and finally smooth and shine it.Smith drew attention to the advantages which could be gained if these various tasks were performed by different workers.Let one be responsible for preparing the metal.Another for stretching and cutting.Another for shaping.Another for finishing.He described the technique as the Division of Labor; in this way workers repeat the same actions again and again.Smith made the world believe that specialization could solve the problem of poverty and want.
What was the result?The Industrial Revolution.Productivity was greatly increased.For Britain,where the revolution started,there was a prosperity which made it the richest country in the nineteenth century.British trains and railway lines spread out like a spider's web across the world. British ships were used to carry the new goods from one corner of the world to another.
The revolution is not over.It is still with us,but now it is a worldwide phenomenon (現(xiàn)象). Everywhere,factories are producing large numbers of similar products,and are in continuous production.What were called mass-production lines yesterday are called robotic productions today.The pace of change is increasing.And if these techniques have brought us prosperity,they have also brought us a little misery in overcrowded towns,boring jobs and,most of all,unemployment.

57.What would be the best tide for the text?D
A.The Causes of Industrial Revolution
B.Adam Smith,the Economist and Philosopher
C.The Industrial Revolution and Its Significance
D.The Theory of Division of Labor and Its Significance
58.We should be grateful to Adam Smith becauseA.
A.his ideas made it possible for people to improve their lives
B.he invented a more efficient way of pin making
C.he brought to people a high standard of living
D.he started the industrial revolution
59.Which of the following is true according to the text?D
A.The Division of Labor makes work more interesting.
B.Adam Smith insisted that each worker be better paid.
C.Specialization could solve the problem of unemployment.
D.Adam Smith put forward the idea of the Division of Labor.
60.We can learn from the text that the Industrial RevolutionC.
A.led to Adam Smith's idea of specialization
B.was finished in the nineteenth century
C.a(chǎn)lso has its side-effects in society

15.(BBC World Service) Two separate surveys suggest that Britain s teenagers are amongst the heaviest drug-users and drinkers in Europe.The British government has introduced a number of measures to deal with the use and supply of drugs,particularly among young people.
The European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs interviewed 15and 16-year olds in 35countries.26% of boys and 29% of girls in the UK had been addicted to uncontrolled drinking at least three times in the previous month.In the same survey,42% of boys and 35% of girls admitted they had tried illegal drugs at least once.

But schools also try to fight the problem of drug use themselves.At the beginning of 2005a British state school has introduced for the first time random drug testing.Students from a school in Kent will have mouth swabs (棉簽) taken to discover drug use.Each week 20names will be selected by computer and the swabs sent off to a drug testing laboratory.Results will be available three days later.The school's head teacher says that no child will be tested against his or her wishes.Children who test positive will not be forced to leave the school,but those who sell drugs will.

45.From the surveys,we learn that in Europe only the UK has the highest number of B.
A.the teenagers who have used cocaine
B.the 15-year-olds who have tried cannabis
