Dorothea Shaw is 71 years old and nearly blind, and she chooses to live alone far away from people in Blize. Her home is at Gales Point, a small village which can be reached only by sea or air: after a 500-meter walk into the hills one finally reaches a piece of land and two small houses. They are so hidden in the thick over-grown forest that only a few people know Dorothea is there.

She lives happily growing her vegetables, looking after her trees and dogs, cats and chicken. About once a month or so an old friend passes by with her food and letters from her sisters and some bits of clothing from friends in Canada. Sometimes a worker who lives not far will come and cut wood for her and a group of British soldiers will come across her and be greeted with the offer of a cup of coffee.

At night she lies in her small sleeping room with the dogs on the floor, the cats on the table and one of the hens in a corner of the room and listens for hours to some news over the radio. Sometimes she feels lonely but most of the time the radio is her friend.

But recently the very things she tried to get free from so well have begun to catch up with her. The peace of the forest has been destroyed by the noise of earthmoving machines that are not many miles away. The new north-south road cuts through the forest only four or five miles away. “Now more and more people know I’m here,” she said. “I feel more and more uneasy each day.”

1.We can infer that Dorothea lives a _____ life.

A.rich and happy                            B. simple and easy

C. hard but happy                            D. rich but uneasy

2. Dorothea spends a lot of her time ____.

    A. cutting wood                              B. building the road

C. listening to the radio                    D. talking with the soldiers

3. What makes Dorothea feel more and more uncomfortable?

    A. The peace of the forest has been spoiled.

    B. Her food is getting shorter and shorter.

    C. Something is wrong with her eyes.

    D. She is becoming older and older.

4. The writer wrote this article mainly to tell people _____.

    A. how Dorothea lives alone in a lonely place

    B. why Dorothea lives in such a lonely place

    C. that Dorothea is a strange old woman

    D. what kind of place Dorothea lives in

I’m Rich Kleinfeldt with some expressions using the word “heart”. People believed for a long time that the heart was the center of a person’s emotions. That is why the word “heart” is used in so many expressions about emotional situations.

One such expression is to lose your heart to someone. When that happens, you have fallen in love. But if the person who won your heart does not love you, then you are sure to have a broken heart. In your pain and sadness, you may decide that the person you loved is hard-hearted, and in fact, has a heart of stone.

At that time, you may decide to pour out your heart to a friend. Telling someone about your personal problems can often make you feel better. If your friend does not seem to understand how painful your broken heart is, you may ask her to have a heart. If she says she is sorry, she shows great concern for how you feel. Your friend may, however, warn you, not to wear your heart on your sleeve(袖子). In other words, do not let everyone see how lovesick you are.

In the ever-popular motion picture The Wizard of Oz(綠野仙蹤), the Tin Man seeks a heart. He wanted to feel the emotion of love. The Cowardly Lion, in the same movie, did have a heart. But he lacked courage and wanted to ask the Wizard of Oz to give him some. You could say that the Cowardly Lion was chicken-hearted. That is another way of describing someone who is not very brave.

A chicken is not famous for its bravery. Thus, someone who is chicken-hearted does not have much courage. When you are frightened or concerned, your heart is in your mouth. You might say, for example, that your heart was in your mouth when you ask a pay rise. If boss says no to you, don't lose heart, be strong-hearted. Sit down with the boss and have a heart-to-heart talk. Be open and honest about your situation. The boss may have a change of heart. Then you could stop worrying and put your heart at rest.

1.The main idea of this passage probably is     .

A.to tell us how to express emotions with phrases with the word “heart”

B.to tell us that the heart is the center of emotions

C.to tell us some interesting phrases with the word “heart”

D.to tell us the importance of the correct use of phrases with the word “heart”

2.If you are fascinated(迷住了)by someone, we can say that you     .

A.lose someone’s heart               B.pour out your heart to someone

C.lose your heart to someone          D.win someone’s heart

3.If someone has little courage, he or she may be described as     .

A.hard-hearted                        B.a(chǎn) change of heart

C.strong-hearted                      D.chicken-hearted

4.You have been admitted(錄。﹊nto a famous university, and then you’ll     .

A.have strong heart                   B.lose heart

C.put your heart at rest              D.have a heart

Dear Carrie,

Your brother sounds like a very selfish person. But I want to know what causes him to act this way. Since he seems to be doing this on purpose, maybe the only way to do with the problem is to try to find the cause.

I think your brother is probably hurting in some way. Perhaps he feels unsafe because he is not a full part of the family. He could be jealous (嫉妒) of your mother's love for the rest of you over him.

It is wrong to fight anger with anger though you think it is a need to help your mother. I suggest you try to help your brother by treating him with more care and love. It must be hard for him to grow up in a family where his sisters had their real mother but he didn't. Try to let him know that you care about him. Over time he may come to know how lucky he is and start to treat you all with the same kindness that you give him.

1. From the passage we may know that ____.

A. there are two mothers in the family

B. the mother is the brother's stepmother (繼母)

C. the family is not a full family

D. the brother has three sisters in the family

2. The writer suggests that Carrie ____.

A. treat her brother with more love and care

B. find her mother with more fights

C. find the cause for her brother's habit

D. fight against her brother with anger

3. The writer thinks Carrie's brother ____.

A. should know Carrie treats him with kindness

B. should be treated more kindly

C. is very lucky to live in such a family

D. is a bad young man

4. In Carrie's letter she must have said that ____.

A. she often punished her brother

B. she often gave her brother love

C. she often felt sad and angry in the family

D. her mother wasn't a good mother
