71  I thought I might be the only person left in the world who hadn’t done an eBay deal. So, I decided to try my hand at online auction(拍賣).

Buying for beginners: Sign up on www, ebay.co.uk. Most items (e.g.tables, computers, and books) ready for auction will come with a picture and a short description; others may be marked with “buy it now” and have a fixed price.   72

If the item is being auctioned ,you offer the highest price you are prepared to pay and eBay bids (出價)for you. The bid will be increased little by little until it goes beyond your highest bid, then you are emailed and asked if you would like to bid again. Auction last up to 10 days and when they finish you get an email telling you whether you have won the item.

73   Sellers decide how they would like to be paid and you need to check this before placing a bid as you might not want to post a cheque or postal orders. The easiest way is through PayPal, an online payment system that takes the money away from your credit card.

Selling made simple: if you plan to sell on eBay, it helps to include a picture of the item. I followed my friends’ advice and put up the items I wanted to sell for a 10-day auction, starting on a Thursday.   74

The big things in life: it’s easy to post a small item, but furniture is a big part of eBay and this has to be collected or sent by deliverymen.  75

A.      How to pay:

B.      Pay exact money before buying.

C.      You can buy these right away.

D.     Make sure of the item you want to buy.

E.      Everyone is at it, even my neighbors.

F.      Check the ways of the delivery before you bid.

G.     This way buyers had two weekends to bid.

BEIJING —With a series of measures being adopted to control price rise, the Chinese government is confident of keeping prices at a reasonable level, Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday morning, asking people to remain confident.

“I believe we can keep prices at a reasonable level through our efforts. As a major leader of the government, I have the responsibility and I have the confidence, too.” He made the remarks while answering a listener’s question during a radio broadcast by China National Radio.

Steps taken in the past month, including price controls to curb speculation(抑制投機) and monetary tightening(貨幣緊縮), had started to produce results, he said.

The government plans to build 10 million units of affordable housing in 2011, up from this year’s target of 5.8 million.

China will also increase efforts to curb speculation in the housing market, mainly through monetary policies and stricter use of land, Wen said, without giving details.

Wen said the country had a good agricultural supply base which gave the government confidence that it could stabilize prices.

In a bid to control inflation, the government has also increased the bank reserve requirement ratio six times and lifted interest rate twice this year, he added.

Further, authorities have introduced many measures including cutting fees for transportation of agriculture products and controlling food price rise strictly.

The overall price level, especially of major consumer goods, has now begun to drop, Wen said.

“The fundamental way to stabilize prices is to achieve a balance of supply and demand, which requires continuous development of agriculture,” said premier, adding that the central government has worked out measures to increase agricultural production.

Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.

Given that I teach students who are training to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”. “What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.

“Surgery(外科手術(shù))”, one replied. I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job. One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height. “They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows, you can get at least 5cm taller!”

At that point, I was shocked. I am short, I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of agony(痛苦) just to be a few centimeters taller. I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!

It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.

No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm. Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost. In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.

60. We can know from the passage that the author works as ______.

A. a doctor B. a model C. a teacher D. a reporter

61. Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to______.

A. marry a better man\woman B. become a model

C. get an advantage over others in job-hunt D. attract more admirers

62. According to the passage, the author believes that ______.

A. everyone should purchase perfection, whatever the cost

B. it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs

C. media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery

D.it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career

63. What does the author think of his height?

A. He hates to be called a short man.

B. He tries to increase his height through surgery.

C. He always wears shoes with thick soles to hide the fact.

D. He just accepts it as it is
