When we walk through the city, we all experience a kind of information overload but we pay attention only to those that are important to us. We don't stop, we keep our faces expressionless and eyes straight ahead, and in doing so, we are not just protecting ourselves but are avoiding overloading other people as well.

We make use of stereotypes(刻板的模式)as convenient ways to make quick judgments about situations and people around us. They may not always be accurate(準(zhǔn)確的), and they can often be dangerously wrong, but they are used regularly.

The problem with the stereotypes is that they restrict experience. By using limited clues to provide us with a rapid opinion of other people or places we may choose to limit our communication. We may decide not to go to certain places because we believe they will not offer something we enjoy.

In the city, styles of dress are particularly important with regard to self-presentation. Different groups often use clearly identifiable styles of clothes so that they can be easily recognized. It is becom-ing increasingly common for brand names to be placed on the outside of clothes, and this labeling makes it easy to send out information about fashion and price instantly, and lets others tell at a distance whether an individual has similar tastes and is a suitable person to associate with.

In England, where social grouping or class continues to make social distinctions (區(qū)分), clothes, hairstyles, people's pronunciation and the manner of speaking are all clues to our social group. Class distinctions tend to be relatively fixed, although in the city where greater variety is permitted, they are more likely to be secondary determining factors of friendship and association.

64. People walking in cities ignore(忽視) the surroundings because________.

A. the environment is already familiar to them

B. everyone else is expressionless

C. they do not wish to talk to other people

D. there is too much information to take in

65. According to the passage, the main disadvantage of using stereotypes is that they ________.

A. can rarely be relied on

B. may make us miss some pleasant experience

C. are likely to lead us into dangerous airports

D. make us mentally lazy

66. From the passage we may conclude that ________.

A. dressing can send messages about individuals

B. people are becoming more interested in fashion

C. stereotypes can help to understand people fully

D. stereotypes can do more good than harm to people

67. It would appear that in England, a person's class ________.

A. plays a more important role than it did in the past

B. is mainly determined by his pronunciation

C. might be less important in making friends in a city

D. is something that can be changed easily

A new period is coming. Call it what you will: the service industry, the information age, the knowledge society. It all translates to a great change in the way we work. Already we're partly there, the percentage of people who earn their living by making things has fallen sharply in the Western World. Today the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan(two-thirds or more are in many of these countries) are in the service industry, and the number is on the rise. More women are in the work force than ever before. There are more part-time jobs. More people are self-employed. But the breath of the great change can't be measured by numbers alone, because it also is giving rise to a new way of thinking about the nature of work itself. Long-held opinions about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between workers and employers -all these are being doubted.

We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie ahead. No one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have seen the ways in which a single invention, the chip(芯片), would change our world thanks to its uses in personal computers, and factory equipment. Tomorrow's achievements in biotechnology(生物技術(shù))or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of great changes. But one thing is certain: information and knowledge will become even more important, and the people who own it, whether they work in factory services, will have the advantage and produce the wealth. Computer knowledge will become as basic a requirement as the ability to read and write. The ability to deal with problems by making use of information instead of performing regular tasks will be valued above all else. If you look ahead 10 years, information service will be leading the way. It will be the way you do your job.

60. In the new period, ________.

A. the service industry is depending more and more on women workers

B. heavy industries are rapidly increasing

C. people find it harder and harder to earn a living by working in factories

D. most of the job chances can be found in the service industry

61. Knowledge society brings about a great change so that ________.

A. the difference between the workers and employers has become smaller

B. people's old ideas about work no longer exist

C. most people have to take parttime jobs

D. people have to change their jobs from time to time

62. What does the author mean by referring to computers and other inventions?

A. People should be able to act quickly to the advancement of technology.

B. Future achievements in technology will not bring about great changes.

C. The importance of high technology has been paid no attention to.

D. Computer science will play a leading role in the future information services.

63. The future will probably belong to those who ________ according to the passage.

A. own and know how to make use of information

B. can read and write well

C. devote themselves to heavy industries

D. work hard

"I am very proud that I brought World Carnival to Beijing," said company president Hans Lodders. "I think it can serve as part of the 2008 Olympic celebrations."

Doris Lessing is a great writer. She was born in Persia (now Iran) on October 22, 1919. Both of her parents were British. In 1925, hoping to get rich through corn farming, the family moved to the British colony in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Though they worked hard, they did not get what they had expected there.

Lessing has described her childhood as an uneven(不平坦的)mix of some pleasure and much pain. Her mother was very strict with her. Doris was first sent to a convent (女修道院) school, and later sent to an all-girls high school in the capital city. However, she soon dropped out from the school. At that time she was thirteen, and it was the end of her formal education.

But like other women writers from South Africa who did not graduate from high school, Lessing made herself into a self-educated writer. Recently she said that unhappy childhood seemed to produce fiction writers. After she left school, Doris took great pleasure in books she got for herself and benefited a lot from them.

In 1937 Doris moved to Salisbury, where she worked as a telephone operator for a year. At nineteen, she married Frank Wisdom, and had two children. A few years later, she was attracted by a group of Communists and later she also became a member of the group.

In 1949, Lessing moved to London with her young son. That year, she also published her first novel, The Grass Is Singing, and began her career as a professional writer.

In her fifty years of being a professional writer, Doris has written a lot of books.

In June 1995 she received an Honorary Degree from Harvard University. Also in 1995, she visited South Africa to see her daughter and grandchildren, and to promote her autobiography(自傳). It was her first visit since being forcibly removed in 1956 for her political view. Ironically(具有諷刺意義地), she is welcomed now as a writer praised for the very topics for which she was forced to leave 40 years ago.
