University students' monthly expenses formobile phones vary from about 20 yuan to several hundred yuan, according to students in Fudan University, Jiaotong University. Whether one has a boyfriend or girlfriend is a critical (關(guān)鍵性的) factor that determines one's payment for a mobile phone, said Ann, a student in Shanghai Finance University, who uses up a 100 yuan card every six months. By contrast, one of Ann's roommates, who studies in the same class with her boyfriend, spends more than 100 yuan every month. They have a habit of making a daily call to each other every night, according to Ann.

"In my opinion, one's outlay (開支) on mobile phone depends on whether he works for some department of the Students' Union and whether he has some part-time jobs which require frequent contact," said Zhuang Jiadong, a student in Jiaotong University, who is the monitor of his class. His average bill for his mobile phone is 200 yuan per month.

At present, the cost of a mobile call is 0.6 yuan per minute, more expensive than using 201 cards by 0.2 yuan. Therefore, some students, especially girls, use mobile phones and telephones alternatively (交替地). "But we boys tend to be lazy and will not bother to use 201 cards which require dialing a long series of numbers," said Zhuang.

A new study shows that large amounts of vitamins and minerals can slow the loss of sight linked to aging. The condition is called age-related macular degeneration or A-M-D. The disease is a major cause of blindness among old people. Doctors don't know what causes it.

The disease destroys the central part of the retina (視網(wǎng)膜), the cells at the back of the eye that gather light. The first sign of A-M-D usually is a loss of visual clearness. People with the disease have trouble reading, driving and recognizing faces. They can't see clearly through the center of their eyes. They must look at things from the sides of their eyes. Over time, A-M-D can cause blindness.

The National Eye Institute carried out the six-year study. Almost 5,000 people in 11 areas of the USA took part. They were between the ages of 55 and 80. Some of the people had more severe forms of the disease than others.

The researchers tested a combination of large amounts of vitamins and minerals. Some people in the study were given the mineral zinc. Others took the vitamins C and E. A third group received both the zinc and vitamins. The remaining people took inactive substances called placebos (安慰劑).

The people in the study were in three groups. Based on the severity of their disease, the researchers compared the vision abilities and other conditions of the patients after 5 years of treatment. Their findings were published in the Archives of Ophthalmology (眼科學(xué)).

The scientists say the combination of vitamins and zinc had no effect on patients with the least severe form of A-M-D.

However, they say the vitamins and zinc helped people with more serious A-M-D.

The treatment cut the risk of developing the most severe form of A-M-D by about 25%. The vitamins and zinc also prevented some vision loss for those patients already suffering severe A-M-D. The patients tak-ing zinc and vitamins separately also were helped but not as much as those taking both. Earlier studies had shown that people who eat large amounts of fruits and vegetables containing important vitamins are at lower risk of developing the eye disease.

5. The disease of A-M-D can lead to ________.

A. blindness B. visual clearnessC. visual loss D. cataract

6. According to what they take, the scientists carried out a study and divided those people into________.

A. two groups B. three groupsC. four groups D. five groups

7. As a healthy person, we should eat more ________to prevent the disease A-M-D.

A. mineral and zinc B. vitamins C. vitamin and zincD. fresh fruits and vegetables

Take care about those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can leave a false impression. For example, someone might say,"I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars!"

This guy is a winner, right? Maybe not. We then discovered that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. He is really a big loser! He didn't say anything that was false, but he intentionally left out important information. That's called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Untrustworthy candidates(候選人)in political campaigns often use this trick. Let's say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents (對(duì)手) runs an ad saying, "During Governor Smith's term, the state lost one million jobs!" That's true. However an honest statement would have been, "During Governor Smith's term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs."

Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It's against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast (吹噓),"Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples." It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation.

This kind of trick happens too often. It's a sad fact of life: Lies and lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.

1. Which of the following statements is true according to the article?

A. All advertisements are lies.

B. You can't trust anyone who tells the truth.

C. The truth can be used in dishonest ways.

D. Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying.

2. What does the underlined word "deceive" probably mean?

A. tell B. explain C. cheat D. win

3. The writer suggests in this article that people should________.

A. believe in nobody B. vote for female candidates

C. stay away from political campaigns D. think carefully about what they read and hear

4. What is the best title for this article?

A. Everyone Lies at Present B. Lying with the Truth

C. Try to Be Honest to the People D. Don't Believe People Who Tell the Truth

Earplugs have been the simple but effective way to stop noise affecting your mind, but their shortcoming is that they also block out sounds you may want or need to hear, such as music or someone talking to you.

The answer to this problem is "active noise cancellation(抵消)"-headphones that are made up of a microphone and electronics(電子裝置) that take all background low-frequency (低頻率) noise, turn the sound waves upside down and rebroadcast them into your ear.

The result is that all the unwanted noises around are blocked out.

In effect, one set of electronically produced sound wave has sucked away the unwanted sound waves of noise.

Stand next to a busy road wearing the noise cancellation headphones and the traffic noise disappears. Sit in an airplane and the engine noise dies away. In a noisy office, the noise of office equipment, people and air-conditioning is gone. You can still, however, hear music or talk with people because that sound does not have a regular pattern and so the device(裝置) does not block it.
