Spider webs are one of the most fascinating examples of animal architecture. The most beautiful and structurally ordered are the round webs. The main function of the web is to stop and hold flying insects, long enough for the spider to catch them. In order to do so,the threads of the web have to stand the forces from large and heavy insects as well as environmental forces from wind and rain for at least a day in most cases.
The round web is found to have two main characteristics. The first is its geometry, which consists of an outer frame and a central part from which threads radiate outward. Enclosed in the frame are capture spirals winding round and round from the web center out to the frame. The whole web is in tension and held in place by anchor threads, which connect the frame to the surrounding plants or objects. The second and perhaps most important characteristic is the material with which it is built. Spider silk is a kind of natural material that gives this lightweight fiber a strength comparable to that of steel, while at the same time making it very elastic(有彈性的). Two types of silk threads are used in the web. One is highly elastic and can stretch to almost twice its original length before breaking and, for most types of spiders,is covered in glue. This type is used in the capture spiral for catching and holding insects. The other is stiffer and stronger, and is used for the radius, frames and anchor threads, which allows the web to stand forces and to keep its structural strength through a wide range of environmental conditions.
7l. What does the word“so”in the first paragraph refer to?
A. To catch and keep small creatures.
B. To find a good material for the web.
C. To make the webs beautiful and well ordered.
D. To make the threads long enough.
72. Which of the following is used for catching and holding insects?
A. The center of the web. B. The capture spirals.
C. The anchor threads. D. The radius.
73. Which of the following correctly gives the names of the numbered threads in the picture?
A. ①capture spiral ② radius B. ①radius ② capture spiral
C. ①anchor thread ② frame thread D. ①frame thread ② anchor thread
74. Which of the following best describes the threads used in the capture spiral?
A. Natural and lightweight. B. Strong and stiff.
C. Smooth and elastic. D. Strong, sticky and elastic.
75. What is this passage mainly about?
A. The wisdom of spiders.
B. The function of round spider webs.

Generally there are two ways to name typhoons;the number-based method and the list-based method. Following the number-based method, typhoons are coded with various types of numbers such as a 4-digit or a 6-digit code. For example, the 14th typhoon in 2003 can be labeled either as Typhoon 0314 or Typhoon 200314. The disadvantage of this method, however,is that a number is hard to remember. The list-based method,on the other hand,is based on the list of typhoon names chosen in advance by a committee, and is more widely used.
At the very beginning, only female names were used because at that time typhoons were named after girlfriends of wives of the experts on the committee. In 1979,however,male names were also included because women protested against the original naming practice for reasons of gender(性別)equality.
In Asia,Western names were need until 2000 when the committee decided to use Asian names to raise Asians’ awareness of typhoons. The names were chosen from a name pool consisting of 140 names,10 each from the 14 members of the committee. Each country has its unique naming preferences. Korea and Japan favor animal names and China likes names of gods such as Longwang(dragon king)and Fengshen(god of the wind).
After the 140 names are all used in order, they will be recycled. But the names can be changed. If a member country suffers great damage from a certain typhoon,it can request that the name of the typhoon be deleted from the list at the annual committee meeting. For example, the names of Nabi by South Korea, and Longwang by China were replaced with other names in 2007. The deletion of both names was due to the severs damage caused by the typhoons bearing the names.
66. With the number-based method,the 3rd typhoon in 2012 can be named .
A. Typhoon 0314 B. Typhoon 0312
C. Typhoon 201214 D. Typhoon 1203
67. In 1979 male names began to be used for typhoons because .
A. men thought it was their right
B. female names are hard to remember
C. women thought it unequal to use only female names
D. the experts preferred to have more variety
68. There are Chinese names in the name pool for typhoons.
A. 2 B. 10 C. 14 D. 140
69. Which of the following Chinese names is most likely to be on the name list now?

C. Daxiang(elephant) D. Mayi(ant)
70. This passage is mainly about .

Although Paris is often considered the city of romance, close to a million adults who call it home are single. Many single people say that France’s capital is one of the most difficult places to meet people. The complaints(抱怨)of this lonely group have inspired a new phenomenon known as “supermarket dating.”At Galerie Lafayette Gourmet, singles can shop for more than just the items on their grocery list. They can look for someone who has blue eyes, brown hair, and is 1.8 meters tall,or whatever may be on their romantic shopping list.
At this paris location, single people of all ages can schedule their shopping for Thursday nights between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. When they walk through the door, they pick up a purple basket to advise that they are looking for love. They try to arrive early because the baskets disappear quickly, and then they have to wait in line for their turn to wander the store aisles(過道).

Howard Dill is a giant among giant pumpkin growers. He grew world champion pumpkins for four years running, from 1979 to 1982,and missed winning the fifth year by a mere 5 pounds. Today, his Dill Atlantic Giant seeds are sold worldwide to more than 50 seed companies. The pumpkins grown from his Dill Atlantic Giant seeds commonly weigh in at over 1,000 pounds.“I don’t have any training in genetics (遺傳學(xué));it was all trial and error,”Dill says. “Reduce, reuse and recycle”, this popular environmental slogan tells us how to reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfills.
The slogan is being used to deal with one possibly dangerous form of electronic junk, such as old computers, cellphones, and televisions. But this process of managing e-waste may be used in an unscrupulous way more often than not, a recent report suggests.
“Many of these materials are being sent to developing nations under the excuse for reuse-to bridge the digital divide,” said Richard Gutierrez, a policy researcher.
One of the problems is that no one proves whether these old machines work before they hit the seaways. Because of this, the report says, e-waste is a growing problem in Lagos, Nigeria, and elsewhere in the developing world. Much of the waste ends up being thrown away along rivers and roads. Often it’s taken apart by poor people, who may face dangerous exposure to poisonous chemicals in the equipment.
Tradesmen also pay workers a little money to get materials back such as gold and copper. This low-tech recovery process could expose workers and the local environment to many dangerous materials used to build electronics. According to Gutierrez, this shadow economy exists because the excuse for recycling and reusing electronics gives businessmen “a green passport” to ship waste around the globe. “Developing nations must take on some of the responsibility themselves,” Gutierrez said. But he added, “a greater part of this responsibility should fall on the exporting state.”
China, for example, has become a dumping place for large amounts of e-waste. The nation is beginning to take action to stop the flow of dangerous materials across its borders. The Chinese government, after many years of denials, is finally beginning to take the lead.
71. The underlined word “unscrupulous” in the second paragraph most probably means “_____”

73. According to what Gutierrez said, we can learn that ________.
A. exporting countries should mainly be responsible for the e- waste problem
B. neither developed nor developing countries should be blamed for the e-waste problem
C. developing countries should mainly be responsible for the e-waste problem
D. developing countries should not be blamed for the e-waste problem
74. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.
A. China has hidden a large amount of e-waste in many secret places
B. China has greatly changed its idea about the problem of e-waste
C. China has prevented poisonous materials from entering China for a long time
D. China is falling behind other countries in dealing with e-waste

We all know that money can’t buy happiness, but many times we act as if we’d be happier with a bit more money. We are conditioned to want to be rich (when we know the rich aren’t happy either); we are trained to want the latest gadget(小玩意兒) or style that television tells us to want; we want to earn more money because then we’ll have the good life.
But none of that will bring us happiness. No matter how much we earn, how much we have in the bank, how nice our clothing or cars or toys, none of it will make us happier.
So what will bring us happiness? Luckily, it’s three things that don’t cost a thing. These three things have been proven by surveys of thousands of people about what they have, what their lives are like, and how happy they are.
Here they are, the Three Secrets to Happiness:
1. Good relationships. We have a human need to be close, to be intimate, with other human beings. Having good, supportive friendships, a strong marriage or close and loving relationships with our family members will make us much more likely to be happy.
Action steps: Take time, today, to spend time with your loved ones.
2. Positive thinking. I’m obviously a big proponent of positive thinking as the best way to achieve your goals, but it turns out that it can lead to happiness too. Optimism and self-esteem are some of the best indicators of people who lead happy lives.
Action steps: Make positive thinking a habit. Get into the habit of squashing all negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. Instead of “I can’t” think “I can”.
3. Flow. This is a popular concept on the Internet these days — the state we enter when we are completely focused on the work or task before us. We are so buried in our task that we lose track of time. Having work and leisure that get you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to happiness.
People find greatest enjoyment not when they’re passively mindless, but when they’re absorbed in a mindful challenge.
Action steps: Find work that you have a passion for. Seriously — this is an extremely important step. Find hobbies that you have a passion for. Turn off the TV — this is the opposite of flow — and get outside and do something that truly engages you.
You’ve been given the Three Secrets to Happiness. Don’t waste them!

President Obama is encouraging moms to make their education a priority. While encouraging people of all ages to seek their education, Obama is particularly targeting working moms with his Scholarships for Moms program. The Scholarships for Moms program builds on the federal government’s long-standing offer of Pell Grants. To encourage more mothers to return to school, the Obama administration is now making some changes.
For the Scholarships for Moms program, the biggest incentive is the amount of money being offered. The maximum amount awarded through Pell Grants is about $4,000 per student, but for mothers who apply to the program, the amount is increased to $5,000. The aim of these grants is to allow working moms to return to school and earn a degree that allows them to better provide for their families now and in the future. In addition, the administration hopes that equipping mothers to earn more money as working professionals will also be a stimulus to the economy.
In addition, a great incentive for mums considering this program is that it applies to enrollment in nearly any type of higher education institution. Four-year universities as well as smaller community colleges, are covered. You can go to a private school or a public one. An option for busy moms who can’t stay on campus is to study through online courses. Basically the government’s Scholarships for Moms program is a comprehensive attempt to get mothers who are keen on study back into the classroom.
With the Obama scholarship, the worry of returning to school is removed. In almost any area of interest, working moms can earn a degree. This means they can be fully equipped to provide for their families. Higher education no longer has to be an unfulfilled wish or unobtainable goal.
