Mr. Flower was well-known around for growing the best flowers of the year and his four glass-houses were taken good care of. These glass-houses were close to a public path, which was always used 1 children and young people walking to and from 2. Boys of about thirteen years of age, especially, were often tempted(嘗試) to throw a stone or two at one of Mr. Flower’s 3 . They managed to resist the temptation(抵制誘惑) when Mr. Flower was around, but the temptation often seemed to be too 4 when Mr. Flower was 5 to be seen. He had hidden in the bushes(灌木叢)and 10 those boys that threw stones 11 his garden, but the boys could run 12 faster than he, and they even 13 at him at a distance. He had even walked along the path and picked up all those 14 that he could find so that the boys would have nothing to 15, but they soon found others, or threw lumps of earth instead.
Then just as he had given 16 hope of winning the battle, a truly wonderful 17 came up to him. He set up a large notice board made of good strong wood, some meters away from the glass-houses 18 it could be clearly seen from the path. On the board he painted the 19 : DO NOT THROW AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flower had no 20 . The boys were much more tempted to throw stones at the notice board than at the glass-houses.
