The night was dark, though sometimes the moving clouds allowed a star or two to be seen in the sky. The poor men held on to any bit of wood they could find. They called to the Marie (圣母瑪麗亞) for1, but she was far2the reach of the human voice. At one o’clock in the morning, the water was getting3, and a strong4had begun to blow. Suddenly5were seen in the distance; another ship! The shouts of the swimmers were heard on board, and willing hands pulled them out of the water. The6of the ship that had so7arrived on the scene in time to save their lives was Ellen. What had brought her to the exact spot through the8and the pathless sea? Her captain had known9about the wreck (沉船) and had indeed attempted to sail away from it. But let him speak for himself.
“I was forced by the wind,” he said long afterwards, “to10my course (航道). Just as I did it, a small11flew across the ship once or twice and then12at my face. I took13of this until exactly the same thing happened at a14time, which caused me to think it rather15, while I was thus16it, the same bird for the third time, made its appearance and flew17in the same way as before. I was then18to change my course back to the original (原來的) one. I had not gone far19I heard strange noises; and when I tried to20where they came from, I found I was in the middle of people who had been shipwrecked (船只失事). I immediately did my best to save them.”

Everyday on the way to work I drive down a street lined with pine trees. One tree in particular1my attention. It must have suffered some2. Part of its trunk grew nearly parallel to the ground, and then in an effort to3its own course of life, the trunk took a 90 degree turn4to stand tall and stretch toward the sun.
This tree became a5for me. Each day as I drove by, I saw this bent but determined tree and I would be6. It was a reminder to me that7I may not have had the best start in life, I could change 8in the parts of my life at any time.
I was planning to stop one day to get a perfect9of my kindred-spirit (志趣相同的) tree. But that week I was10. After that busy week, I still didn’t take any action. Every time I drove by the tree I would11myself, “Tomorrow, I’11 stop tomorrow to take one.” Then one day, as I12by “my” tree, I glanced over, and much to my13found a sawed-off stump (樹樁) where that symbolic tree had stood. Gone. I had14my plan until “tomorrow” and tomorrow proved to be too15.
A picture of a tree is not of great16. But my lesson rang through clearly17I found out one of my colleagues had been18with stage-four cancer. He may no longer have many19.
What have you been putting off? What would you do today if you knew you would20have the opportunity to do it again? Why not do those things that you have been putting off until tomorrow?

My husband and I went into a shop that sold handcrafted items in hopes of finding a few last-minute Christmas gifts.

The plaque now hangs in my living room, a Christmas gift from my husband. I walk past it multiple times each day and19pause to ask myself, "So, am I 20in the rain?"
I think I am. I know I try to. One step at a time, I am learning to dance in the rain!

People who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds.It's1that being full of vim(活力) and vigor(精力) helps the body2illnesses, say the researchers from Carnegie Mellon University(CMU) in Pittsburgh.
"We need to take more seriously the possibility that a3emotional style is a fighter player in disease risk," says psychologist Sheldon Cohen, the study's lead researcher.
In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues found that people who4to be cheerful and lively were5likely to develop sniffles, coughs, and other cold symptoms (癥狀).
Those findings were interesting, but they didn't prove that a person's6affects whether he or she gets sick.7it was still possible that a person's underlying personality is8matters.
9suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing(外向的)and10, with high self-respect and a sense of11over life. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, finally decides our12of catching colds.
To figure out which mattered more (personality or13), the CMU team14193 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. They told the researchers about the positive and negative15they had experienced that day.
The results showed that everyone in the study was16likely to get infected.Their symptoms(征兆), however,17depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the182 weeks.
Scientists19about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger20on how healthy we are.For now, it can't hurt to look on the bright side more often than not!
