My parents took me to Japan when I was little. I lived there for five years.  1  I came back, my Japanese was very good. “Can I do something useful with my Japanese?” I asked myself. Then, one day last spring, I got a good opportunity(機(jī)會(huì)). Everyone was afraid of SARS, so I stayed at home with  2  to do. My father brought me a Japanese book. “Why don’t you translate it into Chinese? It will be better than  3   computer games all day.” I promised(許諾) to do 2,000 words each day. But  4  I found it was hard to keep the promise. One day in May, the weather was beautiful. But I couldn’t go out. Those 2,000 words were still  5   me. After translating only three pages, I already lost interest in the book. I looked at it for a long time. But I couldn’t make myself turn the pages. How wished I could just go outside and  6  football with my friends! I counted the words again and again. I just wanted to give up. I felt as if two people were fighting  7  my mind. One said, “Don’t give up! Keep working hard, and you’ll do well!” But then the other one said, “Go and play! It will be more  8   than translating. Do your work tomorrow.” I stood up and would  9  the computer. But then I remember  10  my parents had told me: “Whatever you do, don’t stop halfway.” So I sat down and went on with it.

Many students talked about the rules that they have in school. At their school, they have to wear uniforms every day. The problem is that all the students think the uniforms are  1  . But the students disagree. They would  4   more comfortable and that is good for studying. If they can’t do that, they should be allowed to design their own uniforms. That would be a good way to keep both teachers and students happy. It’s also probably a good idea for parents to allow teenagers to study in groups during the evening. Sometimes they get noisy   5  they can learn a lot from each other. They also think that vacations should be  6  . At present they’re too short. Longer vacations would give them time to do things like volunteering. Last summer they had an __7__to volunteer at the local  8  , but they couldn’t because they had  to   9   to school. When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence “How do you do?” as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence I your own language.

Language do not just have different sounds, they are different in many ways. It’s important to master(掌握) the rules(規(guī)則) for word order in the study of English, too. If the sentences put words in a wrong order, the listeners can’t understand the speakers’ sentences easily. Sometimes when the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn’t change. Let’s see the difference between the two pairs of sentences.

“She only likes apples.” “Only she likes apples.”

“I’ve seen the film already.” “I have already seen the film.”

When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(精神實(shí)際) of the language and use it as the English speakers do.
