We must have water to live. If the water we use is not clean and fresh ,it can make us ill. The animals that live in and around lakes and rivers must also have clean water.

Our rivers and lakes supply most of our water. The clear, blue water found by the first American settlers has changed. Many of our water sources are now polluted. They are filled with dirt and waste which cannot be cleaned out. In many places, water is not safe for most uses.

Lake Erie was once a beautiful lake. Now it has been called "a dying lake". Waste from nearly homes and factories has dumped into it . Fish can no longer live in much of its polluted water.

George Washington once called the Potomac "the finest river in the world". Now its water is no longer blue. Instead, it is a soupy (羹湯類的) green. Suds (肥皂水)  from detergents (清潔劑) used to wash clothes, often cover the water of our rivers.

Water cannot be made in a factory. Once water is polluted, it is hard to make it clean and safe. We must learn to take care of the water we now have.

I'm interested in the furnished cottage near Dedham which you made known in yesterday's newspaper, for my husband and I are coming to England in June and will stay at the cottage for three months, Would you please tell me exactly where it is and give me some information about bus and train service in the area? We need a cottage on a busy street. And I would also like to know about the shops there. Do the shops still supply I know they did ten years ago.

I would also be thankful if you would tell me whether you supply sheets, etc, and whether a laundry(洗衣店)calls at the house. The rent(租金)you ask sounds reasonable for the size of the cottage. How do you like it paid? Weekly, monthly or in advance?

I would be thankful for an early reply.

The U.S. Department of Labor statistics (統(tǒng)計(jì)數(shù)字) indicate (表明) that there is an oversupply of college - trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing. Already there is an overabundance of teachers, engineers, physicists, aerospace experts , and other specialists (專家(尤提醫(yī)科)). Yet colleges and graduate schools continue every year to turn out highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren’t there. The result is that graduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must take temporary jobs which do not require a college degree. These “temporary” jobs have a habit of becoming permanent.

On the other hand, there is a tremendous need for skilled workers of all sorts: carpenters, electricians, mechanics, plumbers (鉛管工人), TV repairmen. These people have more work than they can handle, and their annual incomes are often higher than those of college graduates. The old distinction (區(qū)分) that white - collar workers make a better living than blue - collar workers no longer holds true. The law of supply and demand now favors the skilled workmen.

The reason for this situation is the traditional belief that college degree is a passport to a prosperous (繁榮) future. A large part of American society equates (認(rèn)為相等) success in life with a college degree. Parents begin indoctrinating (灌輸) their children with this belief before they are out of grade school. High school teachers play their part by acting as if high school education were a preparation for college rather than for life. In this case, whether the kids themselves want to go to college or not doesn’t matter. Everybody should go to college, so of course they must go. And every year college enrollments go up and up, and more and more graduates are overeducated for the kinds of jobs available to them.

One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go to college who do not belong there. Of the sixty percent of high school graduates who enter college, half of them do not graduate with their class. Many of them drop out within the first year. Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up.

1.What do you think would be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.Educational Problems in America.

2.The oversupply of higly - trained people directly caused the problem that ________.

[ ]

A.college graduates cannot find ideal jobs

B.none of the college graduates can find permanent jobs

C.none of the college graduate can find temporary jobs

D.skilled workers have more work than they can handle

3.From the passage, we can know that skilled workers ________.

[ ]

A.have become white - collar workers now

B.can’t find permanent jobs

C.have not much difficulty finding a job

D.used to have a higher annual income than college graduates

4.The problem of the oversupply of college - trained workers is mainly caused by ________.

[ ]

A.the fact that white - collar workers can make a better living

B.the fact that college graduates can find permanent jobs

C.the fact that college enrollments go up every year

D.people’s overemphasis on a college degree

5.The sentence “Many of them drop out within the first year” (Sentence 3, Last Paragraph) means that ________.

[ ]

A.many high school graduates cannot enter college at the very beginning

B.many high school graduates fail in the exams within the first year
