When children are faced with problems, they may not be able to deal with them. Children need to learn how to solve problems. You can help them to learn it. The best way is to take the time to talk about problems as they happen. Of course, this is not easy to do. Problems have a way of bursting upon (突然發(fā)生) someone at the worst time. But even if the time is not the best, you should try to help.

There are many things you can do to help children learn problem-solving skills. One good way is to find out what made the problem happen. This is a skill that children won’t learn without help. A child may knock over a glass of milk at the dinner table, but he may not realize that the glass was too close to the edge. You can show the child what the problem is. Then it can be solved.

The next step for children is to learn how to solve the problem alone.  This step takes courage. 83 Some of them are so afraid of being wrong that they cannot solve problems. You can help them by talking about some possible answers. Then two of you can decide which answer is the best. Let the children try it out. Now the children will see that problems can be solved, and you can praise them for choosing an answer.

Another step to problem-solving is to help children see the laws of cause and effect(因果規(guī)律). If a glass is knocked over, it will fall and break. If children might like to write on the wall, the pencil always leaves a mark. Soon the children will see the link between cause and effect, and then they are on the road to growth. When children see someone else knock over a glass. They now know that it will break. When they see writing on the wall, they can tell how it got there.

84 The ability to solve problems is not easy for children to learn. It is not easy for adults either. It takes patience for you, and it takes practice for the child. But problem-solving can be taught. All you need is time and effort.

Dear Annie,
I have never written a letter to a newspaper before, I have just never felt the need to do such a thing.
I have always felt I was quite able to do everything by myself. But now I know I was wrong. Sometimes
you really need help in life, I guess. And that's why I'm writing this letter to you. I have a happy family. I love
my children and they love me. I'm a mother of three children. I know well how to bring up (帶大) children,
and two of them are already over twenty, so it is nothing new for me.
But now I have a serious problem: the Internet problem. My little son is just sixteen, and I feel he should
do a lot of homework now, but he doesn't seem to be interested in it. He can happily spend six or eight hours
at a time on the Internet every day, He chats with people that he has never met before, but speaks little to us.
He does lots of useless things on the Internet. And he sees red if you ask him to do his homework.
I just want him to be a good student. Now he seldom does his lessons at home. I'm afraid he will drop
behind in his class soon. His father is a doctor, a very kind man. He never seems to be afraid of his father.
What can I do?And don't tell to talk to him. We've tried that and it didn't work. But this is really a big
problem in our family. I have tried everything I can think of. I wonder how the Internet is so attractive
(有吸引力的). You're my last hope. Please tell me what I can do!
                                                                                                                                    Yours,
                                                                                                                                   Ellen Smith

Children's schooling is changing very fast. In the past, teachers kept children sitting still for hours. They
made them memorize (記住) different kinds of things. In other words, the children had to go on repeating
things until they knew them "by heart". Today, many want to know if it's possible to make children learn all.
They say they can only help them learn. They say they must let children learn and find out things themselves.
But for some children, school is a kind of prison (監(jiān)獄). They are there only because their parents make
them go. They get out of the classroom as soon as the teacher lets them leave. Many of them want to find
work, but the law will not let them work until they reach a certain age. And so, they have to stay in school.
Often they do not learn anything at all and hate school every moment.
1. The word "schooling" in the passage means _____.
A. 學(xué)費(fèi)
