“Cool” is a word with many meanings. It means a little cold at first. As time changes, the word gets many different meanings. We can use “cool” when we talk about something wonderful or somebody looking smart. For example. When you see a beautiful and expensive car in the street, you can say, “It is cool.” You may think the famous film star Keanu Reeves is cool. You can also use the word to mean something new and surprising. Here is an example. One day a teacher took the students to a farm and then asked them to write something about the visit. One of her students just wrote, “The farm is so cool.” Because he thought “ cool” was the best word to show what he saw and felt. It also shows some people don’t have enough words.     One day at a park, a woman sat down next to a man on a bench (長椅) near a playground. “That’s my son over there,” she said, pointing to (指著) a little boy in a red sweater.
“He’s a lovely boy,” the man said. “That’s my daughter on the bike in the white dress.” Then, looking at his watch, he called to his daughter, “We have to leave for home now, Rosa.”
“Just five minutes, Dad,” Rosa said, “Please, just five more minutes.”
The man agreed and Rosa went to ride his bike happily. Five minutes later, the father stood and called again to his daughter, “Time to go now?”
“Five more minutes, Dad,” Rosa said again, “Just five more minutes.”
The man smiled and said, “OK.”
“Oh, you are really a patient father,” said the woman.
The man smiled and then said, “Her elder brother Tommy died (死) in a traffic accident (事故)last year when he was riding his bike near here,” the man said, “I never spent much time with Tommy and now I’d like to give anything for just five more minutes with him. Dear Rose,

  How are you?

I like your programmes very much. They're very interesting and I can learn a lot from them. I like traveling and I have won a free four-week trip to England, but I know little about the British way of life. Would you please write to tell me something about the British meals?

  Thank You.

Yours,

Wang Lin

Dear Wang Lin,

It's very helpful to know something about the British meals before traveling. In many English houses, people eat four meals a day. They are breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner.

Breakfast takes place at any time from 7:00 to 9:00 in the morning. They usually have eggs, bread with butter (黃油) , cheese and so on. English people drink tea or coffee at breakfast. Lunch comes at one o'clock. It cap be a hamburger or a threecourse (三道菜) meal. Afternoon tea is between 4:00 pin and 5:00 pm. Dinner begins at about half past seven. The first course is soup. The next is often meat or fish with vegetables. Then comes fruit of different kinds: apples, pears, bananas and so on.

But not all English people eat like that. Some of them have their dinner in the middle of the day. Their meals are breakfast, dinner, tea and supper. And all these meals are usually simple. Wish you a good time in England!

Yours,

Rose
