A picture speaks a thousand words. And with over a thousand emoji pictures to express ours elves, who needs to speak or write anymore?

According to Professor Evans, emoji is the fastest-growing language — faster than any language in history. These little pictures started life in Japanese phones in the 1990s and they are popular now. In the UK they are becoming more popular than Internet words like “l(fā)ol”(laughing out loud) and “muah” (the sound of a kiss). The most popular emoji is the “face with tears of joy ”. In New York’s Museumof Modern Art, we can see the first set of the 176 original (最早的) emojis.

Why do we love emojis so much? They allow us to have fun when expressing ourselves, to make people laugh and to be creative in how we use them. Some teenagers tell us emojis are quick and easy. “They’re quick to use and show hidden meanings. My favorite emoji is the ‘laughing face’,” said Will, a15-year-old student.

When you hear “single-use”, you might think of a product like chopsticks. You use them once, 1them away and forget about them. 2you forget about them, you also forget that you have created rubbish.

“Single-use” is about more than just physical objects. It even 3 the ways that we communicate. On social media, we see many4 and articles. We look, laugh and keep scrolling. We 5look twice. There are too many materials to scroll through!

The result can be called single-use media. I know what6my friends went to last night. However, I don’t know their deepest thoughts and feelings. I don’t even know how their dinner7. I look at their pictures and click “Like”. Then I “throw it away” and keep scrolling.

The convenience of these communication tools makes it8 to forget what we have lost. Before texting and social media, many people communicated9 writing letters, which took time and energy. They had to think carefully about each sentence. People treasured and saved letters for years.

We should value people around10, so stop treating them in the way we deal with chopsticks.

【題目】

For years people have enjoyed following the life of Garfield the cat. Garfield is a popular comic book character, known for being lazy and fat. But the cat was back in the news recently for something you might not expect.

A man in the United States changed the gender of garfield to “none” on the cat’s Wikipedia (維基百科) page. After that lots of people got angry and kept changing Garfield’s Wikipedia page. They argued about whether the cat was a boy, girl or neither.

Wikipedia finally locked the page to stop people editing (編輯) it. Jim Davis, Garfield’s creator, solved the argument.

“Garfield is male,” he simply told the Washington Post. The 71-year-old artist said he liked working with animals because they didn’t have to be old, young, boys or girls. He was angry that some people cared so much about Garfield’s gender.

It seems like quite an unnecessary argument to have. But it is not the only recent example of argument about gender.

To celebrate International Women’s Day in Australia earlier this year, the city of Melbourne made 10 traffic lights with a figure (人形) dressed in a skirt. They were designed to celebrate Women’s Day and give them more confidence in public.

But not everyone thinks the idea is necessary. Some people think it is important for women to be treated fairly in Australia, but that this idea is silly.

“I’m all for doing anything we can for gender equity (公平), but really?” Melbourne mayor (市長(zhǎng)) Robert Doyle told the Herald Sun. The mayor said this idea is more likely to be laughed at than bring respect to women.

B.Garfield can be a boy or a girl, and young or old

C.people don’ t care about animals’age or gender

D.it’s unnecessary to take Garfield’s gender seriously

4What did Melbourne mayor Robert Doyle think of the traffic light idea?

A.It would bring respect to women.B.It was not a good idea for gender equity.

C.It would give women more confidence in public.D.It would help women be treated fairly in Australia.
