The Silk Road is the name of different roads that connected Europe, Africa and Asia long ago. It was named by F. von Richthofen, who was a famous German geographer. Scientists believe people began to travel the Silk Road about 3,000 years ago. People reached these different places along these roads. By the time the Chinese silk trade became important in the world, the Silk Road covered almost 7,000 kilometers. It went from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.
Businessmen travelled along the Silk Road to carry silk, of course. They also carried and traded other things like spices(香料), cloth, jewels and gold.
Along and around these ancient paths(小路), have come many fascinating and mysterious stories.
It is said that Roman soldiers who lost a war travelled through central Asia. They decided to live somewhere near the ancient Chinese villages. Some of these Romans married local Chinese women and the stories of the blondhaired, blueeyed tribes of China was started.
Some historians believe that the people of Kashmir were taken away from their country Israel. They were prisoners(俘虜) of war almost 2,800 years ago. People say that these people travelled along the Silk Road. They kept their Jewish way of life for a long time.
During its busiest period, the Silk Road allowed people from many different cultures and countries to meet each other and mix. The Silk Road allowed the sharing of valuable things and new ideas. It included people and trading goods from different areas. All these peoples travelled the Silk Road, and they shared goods, stories, languages. and cultures.
In modern times, the old Silk Road routes(路線) are still used, but now they are crossed by trains instead of camels and horses. There is even a Silk Route Museum in Jiuquan in China. It has over 35,000 objects from all along the Silk Road. In this way, China protects the history of many countries and peoples.

【題目】
In modern society, living without money sounds almost impossible. However, that’s exactly what an Australian couple from a big city has been doing for nearly a whole year.
Rachel Newby, 25, and Liam Culbertson, 27, have come up with creative ways of making it through the year without spending any money. They built themselves a new house. The house was made of used wood and recycled materials. They grew their own food, and at times they didn’t hesitate to look for food in the dustbins (垃圾箱).
But this year has been quite difficult. The soil in their garden was too poor to grow vegetables. The climate (氣候) there was terrible as well. They kept moving their home till they finally lived in a 2.5-square-meter house. They collected cold rainwater to take a shower. What’s worse, they had to share a toilet with the rest of the community.
Even though they had no jobs, they didn’t have a lot of free time to waste. They spent most of the day working for local farmers planting vegetables and picking fruit so that they could earn their next meal. They had five ducks that could provide them with fresh eggs. But when there wasn’t enough food for them, they had to go to look for food in the dustbins.
Not everyone is brave enough to do this. But they really made it work and they felt happy.

Have you ever tried to hide your emotions (情感)from someone during a conversation? 【1】
Scientists from the Ohio State University have found that people are able to tell other people’s emotions according to changes in the color of their faces.
Scientists studied pictures of people’s facial expressions. 【2】 For example, happiness makes our faces red around the cheeks and a little blue around the chin. Disgust(厭惡)creates not only a blue-yellow color around the lips, but also a red- green color around the nose and forehead.
“We believe these color patterns are the result of small changes in blood flow triggered(觸發(fā)) by the central nervous(神經(jīng)) system." Lead researcher Alex Martinez said.
【3】 Does the color alone or also facial expressions help people tell other’s emotions?
To figure this out, scientists added color patterns to pictures of faces that showed no facial expressions. 【4】They were able to tell the emotions 75 percent of the time without any difficulty.【5】 For example, when two people are heatedly arguing over something, we say they are red in the face. When a person is very angry, we'd say he or she is blue in the face.
A. But this raises a question.
B. It is shown that human emotions are influenced by colors on the face.
C. They found that every facial expression is connected to a certain color.
D. It's not always easy, because the color on your face may tell the truth.
E. Then, volunteers were asked to tell what emotions the faces were showing.
F. This is why there are some Chinese sayings that connect emotions to the color of one’s face.
