Last weekend we went mountain-climbing. Even the heavy rain can not stop us. We set off early and went along an extreme narrow road, all in high spirit. On either side of the road was green fields. We could hear the sound of the rain mixing with our laughter. At noon we reached to the top of the mountain, there we were amazed by the beauty of the scenes. After short rest, we started going down. It rained more harder. We were wet all over, and we still felt happy.

【1】cancould

【2】extremeextremely

【3】spiritspirits

【4】waswere

【5】mixingmixed

【6】to去掉

【7】therewhere

【8】after后面加a

【9】moremuch

【10】andbut

根據(jù)last weekend可知,是一般過(guò)去時(shí),故改成could。

in high spirits高度興奮。

Green fields were on either side of the road,故系動(dòng)詞要用復(fù)數(shù)。

本句中使用的是形容詞短語(yǔ)be mixed with混合著…),作為賓語(yǔ)補(bǔ)足語(yǔ)對(duì)賓語(yǔ)the sound of the rain and our footsteps進(jìn)行說(shuō)明。

after a short rest休息了一會(huì)之后。

much可以用來(lái)修飾比較級(jí),而more是用來(lái)構(gòu)成比較級(jí)的。故改為much。

They like using the Internet. They have lots of pocket money to spend. And they spend a higher proportion of it online than the rest of us. Teenagers are just the sort of people an online seller is interested in, and the things they want to buy — games, CDs and clothing — are easily sold on the Web.

But paying online is a tricky business for consumers who are too young to own credit cards. Most have to use a parent’s card. They want a service that allows them to spend money.

That may come sooner than they think: new ways to take pocket money into cyber (網(wǎng)絡(luò)的) space are coming out rapidly on both sides of the Atlantic. If successful, these products can stimulate (刺激)online sales.

In general, teenagers spend huge amounts: $153bn (billion) in the US last year and £20bn annually in the UK.Most teenagers have access to the Internet at home or at school — 88 percent in the US, 69 percent in the UK. According to the Jupiter Research, one in eight of those with Internet access has bought something online — mainly CDs and books.

In most cases, parents pay for these purchases with credit cards, an arrangement that is often unsatisfactory for them and their children. Pressing parents to spend online is less productive than pressing on the high street. They are more likely to ask “Why?” if you ask to spend some money online.

One way to help teenagers change notes and coins into cyber cash is through prepaid cards such as Internet Cash in the US and Smart cards in the UK. Similar to those for pay-as-you-go mobile telephones, they are sold in amounts such as£20 or $50 with a concealed (隱藏的) 14-digit number that can be used to load the cash into an online account.

1What does the word “They” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A. Sellers. B. Buyers.

C. Teenagers. D. Parents.

2According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. More than half of the teenagers in the US and the UK have Internet access.

B. Teenagers pay for goods online with their own credit cards.

C. Most teenagers in the US and the UK have bought something online.

D. Teenagers found it easier to persuade parents to buy online than in a shop.

3A new way to help teenagers shop online is to use _________.

A. a new machine B. special coins and notes

C. prepaid cards D. pay-as-you-go mobile phones

4What is the passage mainly about?

A. Online shopping traps. B. Internet users in the US and the UK.

C. New credit cards for parents. D. The arrival of cyber pocket money.

Why Don’t Students Like School?

Most of the teachers I know entered the job because they loved school as children. 1 However, they are understandably discouraged when they find that some of their students don’t like school much, and that they, the teachers, have great difficulty inspiring them. Why is it difficult to make school enjoyable for students?

As a matter of fact , the brain is not designed for thinking. It’s designed to ask you not to have to think, because the brain is actually not very good at thinking. Thinking is slow and unreliable. 2People like to solve problems, but they do not like to work on problems that cannot be solved. If schoolwork is always just a bit too difficult for a student, it should be no surprise that he doesn’t like school much.3

What is the nature of being human? 4 Many people would answer that it is our ability to reason that makes us different—birds can fly, fish can swim, and humans can think . (By thinking I mean solving problems, reasoning, reading something complex, or doing any mental work that requires some effort.) Shakespeare thought highly of our cognitive(認(rèn)知) ability in Hamlet: “What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason!” Some three hundred years later, however, Henry Ford came up with a quite different opinion, “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is the probable reason why so few people are interested in it.” They both had a point of view. Humans are good at certain types of reasoning, especially compared to other animals, but we hardly often exercise those abilities. 5Thinking is not only painful, as Ford noted, it’s also slow and unreliable.

A. A cognitive scientist would add another point of view, “Humans don’t think very often because our brains are designed not for thought but for escaping from thought.”

B. What sets us apart from other species?

C. Of course you could make each decision with care and thought.

D. However, people enjoy thinking if it is successful.

E. Therefore, teachers should reconsider how they encourage their students to think, in order to make thinking enjoyable enough for students to go after.

F. If we are all so bad at thinking, how does anyone get through the day?

G. They want to help their students feel the same excitement and passion for learning that they felt.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social-progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: "I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistake belief thatone's self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve (緩解) can we discover a new meaning in competition.

【1】What does this text mainly talk about?

A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B. People hold different opinions about competition.

B. builds up a sense of pride

D. develops people's relationship

3】The underlined phrase “the most vocal” in Paragraph 3 refers to those who ________.

A. try their best to win

B. highly value competition

C. are strongly against competition

D. mostly rely on others for success

4】Which viewpoint does the author agree to?

A. Self-worth relys on winning.

B. Competition leads to unfriendly relationship.

C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.
