When asking about honesty, people always say honesty is very important. However, it seems that there is still some people not fully aware of it. Once I go to the market with my mum for a big dinner on the Saturday. When we were walking past the tables, a loud noise caught my attentions. It came from a butcher’s stand, where a lady accused him injecting water into the pork and asked for the money back. And the butcher refused and even argued it wouldn’t do harm to my health.

We can see being honest is easy said than done. I think we should plant honesty like a tree in our hearts. With it, we will be complete trusted and popular with others. So why don’t we do it now to be honest?

【答案】(1)When asking … asking→asked

(2)… that there is … is→are

(3)… I go to … go→went

(4)… on the Saturday 去掉定冠詞the

(5)…caught my attentions… attentions→attention

(6)accused him… him 后添加 of

(7)And the butcher … And→But

(8)… to my health… my→ her

(9)…is easy said … easy → easier

(10)…be complete trusted… complete→ completely

There be句型中,be動(dòng)詞的單復(fù)數(shù)由離它最近的名詞決定,some people是復(fù)數(shù)意義,所以is→are。

accuse sb. of sth.

但是屠戶拒絕了,并且爭(zhēng)辯說這不會(huì)對(duì)她的身體有害a lady是女的,所以my→ her。

考查比較級(jí)。由than,可知這里用比較級(jí),所以填easy → easier。

考查副詞。修飾動(dòng)詞trusted,用副詞,所以complete→ completely。

【題目】We are naturally drawn to friends and colleagues with familiar voices, scientists have found. People prefer those who have a similar accent, intonation and tone of voice to themselves, they discovered.

Previous research has focused on how male or female a voice sounds. Men with deeper voices and women with slightly higher voices were thought to sound more attractive, because they suggest a bigger or a smaller body.

But the new study, published by a linguistics expert in Canada, suggests there is a more complex mechanism (機(jī)制) at play. Dr Molly Babel, from the University of British Columbia in Canada, said, “The voice is an amazingly flexible tool that we use to construct our identity. Very few things in our voices are changeless, so we felt that our preferences had to be about more than a person’s shape and size.”

She recorded 30 volunteers’ voices and asked each to rate the others’ attractiveness on a range from one to nine. Each participant was from western America, with similar accents. The people we assessed were all in the same dialect group, but they showed that dialect to different degrees.

“We seem to like people who sound like we sound, and we like people who fit within what we know,” Dr Babel said. She also found that breathy voices in women—typified by the famous American actress Marilyn Monroe-were seen as more attractive.

The breathy tone, caused by younger and thinner vocal cords (聲帶), implied youthfulness and health. A creaky (咯吱作響的) voice, suggesting a person has a cold, is tired or smokes, was seen as unattractive. The participants preferred men who spoke with a shorter average word length and deeper voices.

B. shorter word length

D. the same social groups

4Whose voice may be unattractive according to the text?

B. An old lady with a silvery voice.

【題目】Homework: more or less

In answer to the trend, one after another anti-homework movements are coming. This time critics (批評(píng)者) aren’t just complaining that there’s too much of it but they’re also questioning why the homework is so dull.

The argument over what or how much homework should he comes partly from the fact that educators can’t seem to agree on the purpose of homework.

Some teachers think that homework is necessary to strengthen what is learnt in school. And so they ask their students to memorize what was discussed in class through homework.

Some teachers think the point of homework is to cover material that the class didn’t have time to get to, so their homework is to let students learn additional things.

Other teachers like homework simply because they want students to form work habits and still others believe homework is very important because it is the best way for parents to learn what their children do in school.

But many parents seem to have different ideas.

Elisa who has twins at a primary school doesn’t like; the fact that third-grade students in primary schools are asked to write about 25 book summaries a year. “They do the same thing over and over without really getting into alternative ways of thinking about books and thinking about reading and writing.”

Some education reformers such as Howard Gardner, a Harvard University professor, say, “Teachers can ask children to do things which require the use of different kinds of intelligence, for example, preparing for a debate, creating a work of art, designing a program or carrying out different experiments.”

But it is often hard to persuade overworked teachers to give much thought to homework assignments.

Is there much difference between students who do different amounts of homework?

1Which of the following opinions about homework is not mentioned?

A. Students’ attitude. B. Parents’ ideas.

C. Experts’ opinions. D. What teachers think.

2The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to ________.

A. anti-homework B. homework

C. why the homework is so dull D. movement

3Which of the following statements is NOT the teachers' opinion on homework?

A. Homework is necessary to strengthen what is learnt in school.

B. Homework is to cover materials the class didn’t have time to get to.

C. Doing homework is the best way for parents to learn what their children do in school.

D. The children should be asked to do the homework using different kinds of intelligence.
