【題目】For humans, climbing Mount Qomolangma is seen as a great impressive achievement. People make movies, write books, and have essentially developed a whole industry surrounding the challenge that is this mountain. While we consider climbing the mountain as an athletic achievement, there is one animal, the bar-headed goose, does not think so.

As the species migrates (遷徙) from Central Asia to Southeast Asia every autumn, it must cross over the Himalayan range. These mountains force the bar-headed goose to fly at around 30,000 feet above sea level, which is the highest altitude for migratory birds.

These geese have special adaptions that allow them to survive at the altitude. For example, a special protein (蛋白質(zhì)) in blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body allows their blood cells to combine with oxygen. Their circulatory system provides a constant supply of fresh, oxygenated blood to their wing muscles (肌肉). They have much larger lungs than other birds, which give them the ability to take in more air.

Scientists initially believe that the geese flow at an extremely high altitude for the full length of their migration. But later the data suggests that the birds use a much more effective way of travel. Instead of remaining at an extremely high altitude to fly over the mountain range, the geese hug the mountains, flying up and down depending on the obstacles (障礙物) in their way. This works better for them because they don’t have to use all their energy flying in an area with low oxygen; they can spend time flying at lower altitudes.

The geese also make use of nature to make this work easier. To fly down, they simply allow gravity to pull them. To fly back up, they make use of orographic (地形的) lift, which happens when flowing air meets an obstacle, such as a mountain. The mountain forces the air up, creating an upward draft. The birds take advantage of this draft, expending less of their own energy to fly up the mountain.

The way these birds have adapted to flying across the Asian continent during their annual migration is certainly an amazing way to see nature at work.

1What does the underlined part "this work” in Paragraph 5 most probably refer to?

A. To fly down. B. To fly back up.

C. To fly over the mountain. D. To fly at lower altitudes.

2How do the geese behave while crossing over the Himalayan range?

A. By flowing at an extremely high altitude all the way.

B. By taking advantage of the orographic lift.

C. By smoothing the obstacles in their way.

D. By forcing the air up, creating an upward draft.

3What’s the main idea of this passage?

A. The geese’s amazing migration.

B. The highest flying record of geese.

C. The flying mystery of geese.

D. Mount Qomolangma and its geese.

【題目】I learn to fly in a balloon in a race across the Atlantic Ocean in 1992 and became extremely interested in the sport. In the same way that a mountain climber dreams of climbing the world's highest mountain,I dreamed about flying non-stop around the world.

I spent six years planning the flight and failed twice before I and my team managed to succeed. For some reason,we had to go first to North Africa to catch the right winds. That added 10 ,000 kilometers, and another week,to our journey. But because of this, our flight broke all the records for distance and time spent in the air.

The most memorable part of the trip for me is that we lived in the air for 20 days and that the rising sun was the most amazing thing we saw. We had to go out of the balloon’s capsule , in which we were transported, three times while in the air to repair the fuel system. We didn’t have any safety equipment but when you are in a situation like that, you just do what you have to do without thinking about feeling afraid.

Landing was a fantastic moment. I remember that when I got out of the capsule,I looked at my footprint in the sand. I remembered the astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was so happy to put his footprint on the moon,so far away from Earth. At that moment, I was so happy to have my foot back on Earth!

1The author became interested in ballooning because of .

A. a cross-ocean race

B. a mountain climb

C. a childhood dream

D. a long sea journey

2What can be inferred from Paragraph 2 about the author and his team's flight?

A. They set a new record.

B. They shortened their flight.

C. Their flight went very smoothly.

D. Their flight covered 10,000 kilometers.

3Why did the balloonists get out of the capsule during the flight?

A. To fight their fear.

B. To do some repair work.

C. To admire the rising sun.

D. To check safety equipment.

4The author mentioned Neil Armstrong to show his .

A. regret

B. surprise

C. respect

【題目】Attacking school fears

There are real fears and imagined ones. Most school dangers are imagined. 1 Many students have learned to fear teachers and classrooms, textbooks and tests. So first let’s determine what the fears are, and then attack them in a good problem-solving way.

Fear of failure

Most students have plenty of ability to meet school demands. Most assignments and courses are within reason, more likely to be boring than difficult. 2 Once you have had a few successes, you will begin to overcome this fear.

Fear of teachers

This is clearly an unreal fear. Look around at your fellow students. Some of them will be teachers. As you can see, there is nothing special about them. 3 You can get to know them better out of class. Visit them and chat with them.

Fear of talking in class

Anyone can make a mistake, but an hour later people will not even remember a mistake was made. 4 Also keep in mind that your performance in class is almost never the main part of your grade.

5

This fear can help you watch for real danger. The future can be dangerous. But to let it keep you from trying new things would be to give up life. Your own experience shows that most of the time things work out all right. The more things you try out, the more you will feel at home.

A. Fear of starting out

B. Fear of potential danger

C. Rarely is it lack of ability that makes people fail.

D. This is because they are much more concerned with themselves.

E. So don’t hand over power to teachers that they don’t really have.

F. However, school institutions have made most people think otherwise.

G. Often something else is the real problem, not what you first identified.

【題目】The popular smartphone application Instagram(照片分享)has changed the way we look at photography, even our world. The photo-worthy moments we share serve as an important function in cultivating the photographic artistic eye.

Instagram has got people to start noticing the art in their everyday life. It has also allowed us to share the artful moments in our lives with others. Clearly, making people focus on beautiful moments in their lives and how to share them is a positive takeaway from Instagram.

Not only has Instagram changed the way we look at things around us, but it has also changed the way people view professional photography. Instagram has turned everyone with a smartphone into an artist. Opening up art to the general community is a groundbreaking(創(chuàng)新的) aspect of this application. Making artistic attempts accessible for everyone to discover their artistic talents and explore creatively is something that has made people find the beauty in the everyday. However, this accessibility has also created questioning around art and respect deserved by professional photography.

The art in a professional photograph versus an Instagram can sometimes be hard to notice at a quick glance. But photographs taken by true professional photographers hold something that Instagram’s cannot match in terms of photographic quality, or advanced compositional knowledge.

This is not to say Instagram is a lesser art. Aesthetic qualities of art are a personal matter and how good an artwork is depends on personal preferences. Good is a very arbitrary term in the art world. For example, I may find one photo more pleasing than another, but not everyone has to agree with me.

The point I am trying to make is that professional photography should not be lost, but instead approached with a new, enhanced level of respect and admiration despite how accessible, common and fun Instagram now makes the taking and sharing of photos.

【1】What does the writer mainly tell us in the passage?

A. The increasing popularity of Instagram.

B. The advantages and disadvantages of Instagram.

C. The changes that Instagram brings us.

D. The differences between Instagram and professional photography.

2 What can the smartphone application Instagram do?

A. Help people to discover true self.

B. Inspire people to find the beauty in life.

C. Encourage people to be more competitive.

D. Let people gain others’ respect and admiration.

3Why do people begin to doubt the art of professional photography?

A. Because common people can take perfect photos easily.

B. Because they show no respect for professional photographers.

C. Because the artistic level of professional photography is reducing.

D. Because Instagram has changed the way people look at the world.

4What does the writer think of professional photography?

A. Useful. B. Valueless. C. Helpless. D. Absurd.
