A motivational strategy that parents can employ with their kids, is to frame tasks and responsibilities in the context of what the end benefit is for them.I call this strategy WIIFM ("What's in it for me?" ).
When a teen can combine an understanding of WIIFM with a sense of passion about achieving a goal, barriers will start to fall away.At our teen summer camps, we arrange an event near the end of the 10-day session that helps campers identify an important life goal and mentally break through their biggest barrier to achieving the goal. We pass around 12-by-12-inch pine boards. We tell campers that this activity is not about breaking a piece of wood. It's about how you can get what you want in your life. It's about breaking
barriers to grab on to your goals.
They have the power to break through any barrier. It has nothing to do with body size or physical condition. The skinniest, smallest teens will break through the board almost as easily as the big ones.
We talk to the campers about the reasons they might have had for not reaching their goals in the past.Maybe they got lazy and decided it wasn't worth the effort.Maybe they failed and let their fear of failure hold them back. But this exercise is about putting the past where it belongs.Today is about making new choices.
By this point in the program, we ask them to think of the goal they've set or themselves and write their goals on the boards. Then they write the possible obstacles which may hold them back on the opposite sides. An inch of pine now stands between them and their dreams.
The facilitators and their teammates gather around. The support is strong. One by one, they break through the barriers and grab their goals! All around us teens are laughing, crying, hugging, and holding up the broken pieces of their boards. The confidence shown on their faces is beautiful.
While arranging such an activity in one's home is almost unrealistic for parents, the value of helping a teen break through a personal hairier simply by being there as moral support can not be overestimated.More help for parents in the form of videos and articles is available at our website, in our blogs and in a monthly e-newsletter.

【小題2】We can learn from the passage that through the event the campers ______.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2013屆湖南省長(zhǎng)沙市高考模擬英語(yǔ)試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解

There is a saying in French—“Si vieillesse pouvait, si jeunesse savait”—which means roughly “if age had the ability, if youth had the knowledge.” I was reminded of this saying the other day when I saw an interview with a distinguished Asian neurosurgeon(神經(jīng)外科醫(yī)生), now retired, about the impact of computer technology on modern surgery.
He was referring to the difficulty people of his age had in using the new techniques, but also to the fact that younger surgeons, who are more comfortable with the technology, lack some of the wisdom of experience.
It struck me that this problem is not just confined(局限于) to specialized fields such as medicine, but is widespread in modern life. There are many areas where the rapid growth of technology has widened the generation gap.
Young people are at ease with modern technology and propose all sorts of ways for using and developing it. But they often lack the experience needed to see further into the future to the possible dangers that a particular development may cause.
Older people see all sorts of difficulties and dangers, but are sometimes ignored, or even accused of being against progress, if they point out potential problems. Equally, they may see potential uses, but not have the technical skills to put them into practice themselves or the trust in the younger generation to do so.
Enthusiasm and inexperience come into conflict with caution and arrogance, usually with unsatisfactory results for both sides.
What is needed is the development of a partnership, based on mutual respect, which can deliver real progress by combining enthusiasm and caution in a constructive way, rather than in conflict with each other. The old need to give the younger generation the time, the resources and, above all, the authority to develop new ideas and use their skills. In exchange, the young need to turn more actively to the older generation to seek their advice and exploit their greater experience of the world in foreseeing and overcoming potential problems.
【小題1】The passage is mainly about ________.

A.the impact of computer technology on modern surgery
B.a(chǎn)n interview with a distinguished Asian neurosurgeon

D.prove the writer’s wisdom
【小題3】What did the retired neurosurgeon probably mention in his interview?
A.Old people’s enthusiasm in obtaining new technology.
B.Old people’s difficulty in using computers.
C.Young surgeons’ bad manners in working.
D.Young surgeons’ difficulty in getting experience.
【小題4】In the writer’s view, what advantage do the older generation have?
A.They are happy with modern technology.
B.They are easy to learn new techniques.
C.They can foresee the future of the young generation.
D.They are rich in work experience.
【小題5】What conclusion can be drawn from the last paragraph?
A.The young and the old should respect and learn from each other.
B.The young should teach the old modern technology.

My grandmother seems to be wrong when she says that good manners will never go out of style.
Several days ago, I tried entering a lift with one of my arms fixed in a bandage(繃帶) while carrying a computer bag in the other. Not being fast enough, I was passed by two young people who managed to get into the lift before me. The lift door closed only after I entered. Having already pressed their wanted floor button, the young people waited impatiently for me to press the button for where I was going. If they had decided to help, we could have moved much faster. But they had not. So I did my best and pressed the button with my arm. The two young people looked very angry with me. I was losing heart.
The memory of this incident has stayed with me because it followed shortly after my building’s watchman refused to help me carry a heavy box full of books. His answer was that he could not carry the books a few meters because it was not his job. However, I remembered myself helping people for so many years carrying boxes, shopping bags, or pushing wheelchairs upon the request of a stranger in need or when my conscience(良心) called on me. "Oh, this young generation, they have no manners, ”my grandmother would say. The idea of good manners refers to the considering of other people’s feelings. We need more and more people to have good manners. Good manners should be-come part of our lives.

When I was a kid, I used to spend hours listening to Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew Pinsky on their Sunday night radio show Loveline. I listened so often that I began to use one of their well-known phrases—“good times”—in my daily conversations. Scientists have a name for this phenomenon: behavioral mimicry.
You’ve probably experienced this before: after spending enough time with another person, you might start to pick up on his or her behavior or speech habits. You might even start to develop your friend’s habits without realizing it. There is a large body of literature concerning this sort of phenomenon, and it regularly happens for everything from body gesture to accents to drink patterns(模式). For example, one study found that young adults were more likely to drink their drink directly after their same-sex drinking partners, than for the two individuals to drink at their own paces.
And the effect isn’t limited to real-life face-to-face activities. Another study found that the same you-drink-then-I-drink pattern held even when watching a movie! In other words, people were more likely to take a drink of their drinks in a theater after watching the actors on the screen enjoy a drink. At least I don’t feel so strange anymore, having picked up on Adam Carolla’s “good times”.
New research published today in the journal PLOS ONE indicates that the same sort of behavioral mimicry is responsible for social eating, at least among university-age women of normal weight. That’s right: the young women were more likely to adjust their eating according to the eating pace of their same-sex dining companion.
As with most experiments, these results raise a whole new set of questions. However, the finding that behavioral mimicry may at least partly explain eating behavior is important, and has real effects on health. The researchers note that “as long as people don’t fully recognize such important influences on intake (eating), it will be difficult to make healthy food choices and keep a healthy diet, especially when people are exposed to the eating behavior of others”.
【小題1】The author takes his own example of using “good times” to_______.

A.express his love for radio shows
B.prove the popularity of the show
C.show the influence of the hosts’ words
D.introduce the topic of the passage
【小題2】Which of the following is NOT an example of behavioral mimicry?
A.A boy eats his popcorn after watching the actor eat.
B.A boy buys a Nike shirt when he finds his desk-mate has one.
C.A girl unconsciously sits straight just as others do.
D.A girl takes on the Yorkshire accent after a month’s stay.
【小題3】It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _______.
A.behavioral mimicry is beneficial to our health
B.behavioral mimicry decides our eating behavior
C.people have realized the effect of behavioral mimicry on our health
D.It’s impossible to keep a healthy diet without knowing behavioral mimicry
【小題4】What is probably the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A.To draw readers’ attention to popular radio shows.
B.To introduce behavioral mimicry and its influence.
C.To appeal to readers not to fall into others’ habits.
D.To advocate healthy food choices among readers.

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing? Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests they both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.
“I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.”
Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent—child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic(民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say.
“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the  ‘a(chǎn)fter’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily done by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”
【小題1】The underlined word gulf in Para.3 most probably means _________.

A.interestB.distanceC.differenceD.separation
【小題2】Which of the following shows that the generation gap is disappearing?
A.Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.

D.Parents share more interests with their children.
【小題3】The change in today’s parent-child relationship is _________.
A.more confusion among parents
B.new equality between parents and children
C.1ess respect for parents from children
D.more strictness and authority on the part of parents
【小題4】By saying “today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘a(chǎn)fter’ side.” the author means that today’s parents _________.
A.follow the change
