【題目】閱讀理解。

I am Peter Hodes , a volunteer stem cell courier. Since March 2012, I’ve done 89 trips—of those , 51 have been abroad. I have 42 hours to carry stem cells(干細(xì)胞)in my little box because I’ve got two ice packs and that’s how long they last. In all, from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor(捐獻(xiàn)者) to the time they can be implanted in the patient, we’ve got 72 hours at most. So I am always conscious of time.

I had one trip last year where I was caught by a hurricane in America. I picked up the stem cells in Providence, Rhode Island, and was meant to fly to Washington then back to London. But when I arrived at the check-in desk at Providence, the lady on the desk said:“Well, I’m really sorry, I’ve got some bad news for you—there are no flights from Washington.” So I took my box and put it on the desk and I said:“In this box are some stem cells that are urgently needed for a patient-please, please, you’ve got to get me back to the United Kingdom.” She just dropped everything. She arranged for a flight on a small plane to be held for me,re-routed(改道)me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled.

For this courier job, you’re consciously aware that in that box you’re got something that is potentially going to save somebody’s life.

【1】 Which of the following can replace the underlined word “courier” in Paragraph1?

A. provider B. elivery man

C. collector D. medical doctor

【2】 Why does Peter have to complete his trip within 42hours?

A. He cannot stay away from his job too long.

B. The donor can only wait for that long.

C. The operation needs that much time.

D. The ice won’t last any longer.

【3】 Which flight did the woman put Peter on first?

A. To London. B. To Newark.

C. To Providence. D. To Washington.

【答案】

【1】B

【2】D

【3】B

【解析】

試題分析:

【1】推斷題。根據(jù)文章第一段第三句 “from the time the stem cells are harvested from a donor to the time they can be implanted in the patient” 可以推測(cè),“我”負(fù)責(zé)的時(shí)間段是當(dāng)干細(xì)胞從捐獻(xiàn)者身體里取出之后到送到患者那里,可知“我”的身份像一個(gè)投遞員(delivery man)。A項(xiàng),意為“供應(yīng)商”,C項(xiàng),意為“收集者”,D項(xiàng),意為“藥物醫(yī)生”,均不符合文意。故正確答案為B。

【2】細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章第一段第二句 “I have 42 hours to carry stem cells in my little box because I've got two ice packs and that’s how long they last” 可知,“我”有42小時(shí)來(lái)用“我”的小箱子攜帶干細(xì)胞因?yàn)椤拔摇庇袃蓚(gè)冰袋,并且能持續(xù)制冷42小時(shí)。超過(guò)了42小時(shí),冰袋就不會(huì)再持續(xù)維持低溫了。故正確答案為D。

【3】細(xì)節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章第二段最后一句 “re-routed me through Newark and got me back to the UK even earlier than originally scheduled” 可知,在“我”說(shuō)了“我”的處境以后,值機(jī)柜臺(tái)的服務(wù)人員安排“我”了一架小飛機(jī)并為“我”改道經(jīng)過(guò) Newark 并返回英國(guó)。所以 Peter 首先到達(dá) Newark。故正確答案為B。

【題目】Farming is moving indoors, where the sun never shines, where rainfall is irrelevant and where the climate is always right. The perfect crop field could be inside a windowless building with controlled light, temperature, wetness, air quality and nutrition. It could be in a New York highrise or a sprawling complex in the Saudi desert. It may be an answer to the world's food problems.

The world already is having trouble feeding itself.Half the people on Earth live in cities, and nearly half of those- about 3 billion-are hungry or illfed.Foodprices, currently increasing, are buffeted by dryness, floods and the cost of energy required to plant, harvestand transport. And prices will only get more unstable.Climate change makes longterm crop planning uncertain.Farmers in many parts of the world already are using water available to the last drop. And the world is getting more crowded:by midcentury, the global population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9 billion.

To feed so many people may require expanding farmland at the expense of forests and wilderness,or finding ways to completely increase crop output.

Gertjan Meeuws has taken the concept of a greenhouse a step further, growing vegetables and house plants in enclosed (封閉的) and regulated environments. In their research station, water flows into the pans when needed, and the temperature is kept constant.Lights go on and off, creating similar day and night, but according to the rhythm of the plant.

A building of 100 square meters and layers () of plants could provide a daily diet of 200 grams of fresh fruit and vegetables to the entire population of Den Bosch, about 140,000 people.Their idea isn't to grow foods that require much space, like corn or potatoes.

Here sunlight is not only unnecessary but can be harmful.Plants need only specific wavelengths of light to grow.Their growth rate is three times faster than under greenhouse conditions. They use about 90 percent less water than outdoor agriculture. And city farming means producing food near the consumer, and there's no need to transport it long distances.

1What can we mainly learn from Paragraph 2?

A. The climate is worse and worse.

B. The city people live a hard life.

C. The world has difficulty feeding its people.

D. The world's population is increasing fast.

2Which of the following is true of the environments in the research station?

A. The temperature is often changed.

B. Sunshine is in great need for plants.

C. Day and night depends on plants.

D. Air quality is controlled by plants.

3It can be inferred from the text that Gertjan Meeuws's farming________.

A. helps save sea water a lot

B. is highly adaptable

C. resembles greenhouse agriculture

D. suits the production of corn

4What is the text mainly about?

A. Development of indoor farming.

B. Great Revolution in farming.

C. Advantages of indoor farming.

D. Sunless,rainless indoor farming.

【題目】閱讀理解。

A lot of us lose life’s tough battles by starting a frontal attack—when a touch of humor might well enable us to win.Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum about being late on the job.Although there was a good reason for Sam’s a being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His supervisor was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.

Yes,the boss was.Sam entered the office at 9:35.The place was as quiet as a locker room;everyone was hard at work.Sam’s supervisor came up to him.Suddenly,Sam forced a grin and stretched out his hand.“How do you do!” he said.“I’m Sam Maynard.I’m applying for a job, which,I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago.Does the early bird get the worm?”

The room exploded in laughter. The supervisor clamped off a smile and walked back to his office.Sam Maynard had saved his job—with the only tool that could win,a laugh.

Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”,criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs,it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.

【1】Why was Sam late for his job?

A.Because he was ill.

B.Because he got up late.

C.Because he was caught in a traffic jam.

D.He was busy applying for a new job.

【2】The main idea of this passage is ________.

A.Sam Maynard saved his job with humor

B.humor is important in our lives

C.early bird gets the worm

D.humor can solve racial discriminations

【3】The phrase clamped off in Paragraph 3 means ________.

A.tried to hold back B.tried to set

C.charged D.gave out

【4】Which of the following statements can we infer from the passage?

A.Many lose life’s battles for they are lacking in a sense of humor.

B.It wasn’t the first time that Sam came late for his work.

C.Sam was supposed to come to his office at 8:30.

D.Humor is the most effective way of solving problems.
