People who buy solar panels (嵌板)for their home hope to help the environment and save some money. But they end up with large metal boxes on their roof. Tesla, a car company, solved the problem. The solution is the Solar Roof. It is a series of tiles () made to look like traditional roofing material while using the power of the sun. Tesla developed it with SolarCity, a longtime provider of solar panels. It is now available to the public.

Goodyear is reinventing the wheel. It introduced its Eagle 360 spherical tire (球形輪胎) in March, 2016. The tires allow cars to move in many directions, including sideways, and at angles to handle slippery surfaces. The key is magnetic levitation (磁懸浮). Tires are fixed to cars, but Eagle 360s float beneath them. They’re meant for self-driving cars of tomorrow.

Cycle Safety

Jeff Woolf had a serious bike crash. If he hadn’t been wearing his helmet, he would have been badly hurt. He wondered why so many riders didn’t wear helmets. That turns out it was mostly because helmets were big and hard to carry around. Woolf, an engineer, came up with Morpher. The helmet is made from interwoven plastics (交錯(cuò)編織的塑料). 【題目】How to Be a Great Best Friend

Everyone wants to be a great best friend but doesn’t know how or where to start that perfect friendship. The following will help you.

Be your own best friend first. 1 If you can’t respect yourself, then you can’t respect others. Understand what values are important to you and stick to them. Seek out others who honor those values because you’ll only end up hurting yourself and possibly others if those people don’t have the same values as you.

Trust each other. 2 All you have to do really is make sure you can both trust each other. Don’t try to trick or use your friend to your advantage; you need to make them know they can trust you.

Learn to listen. Nobody likes a best friend who just talks and talks, but never listens. If you’re a chatterbox, try to develop good listening skills. Whenever your best friend says something, listen carefully and say something. 3 If they ask for advice, listen carefully and give them the best advice you can.

Care for your best friend. If your best friend is upset, ask them what’s wrong, They might not tell you straight away, but they should in the end. 4 Understand that certain things are private, and trust that they’d be just as patient with you if you were in their shoes.

Let your friend have other friends, too. If your best friend picks another friend over you, try to be friends with their friend too. 5 Everyone is always looking for new friends. But never leave the old one; your loyalty(忠誠(chéng)) is what the other person expects and counts on every day.

A. Learn how to respect yourself.

B. Maybe you guys can be a group of friends!

C. Don’t interrupt while they’re talking to you.

D. Best friends are the most valuable friends you have.

E. If they don’t tell you, don’t get angry at them.

F. To be a great best friend really doesn’t take much.

G. Take time out of your day to appreciate the funny things in life.

If you said you were suffering from “burnout” in the early 1970s, you might have raised some eyebrows.

At the time, the term was informally to describe the side effects that heavy drug users experienced.

However, in 1974, a German-American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger found the volunteers at his clinic were struggling, too: their work was tough, and many were lacking in motivation. Freudenberger defined this condition as a state of extreme tiredness caused by constant overworkand borrowed the term “burnout” to describe it.

Late last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the problem will be recognized as a syndrome (綜合征) “resulting from workplace stress that has not been successfully managed.”

Feeling the burn so how can you tell if you’re almost burned out?

“A lot of the signs and symptoms of pre-burnout would be very similar to depression,” says Siobhan Murray, a psychotherapist. She suggests looking out for bad habits, such as increased alcohol consumption and relying on sugar to get you through the day. Also watch out for feelings of tiredness that won’t go away or not having the energy to exercise or go for a walk. As soon as you begin to feel this way, Murray advises going to see your doctor. “Depression and pre-burnout are very similar. But it is still classified as an occupational phenomenon which is still best tackled by making lifestyle changes.”

And how do you know if you’re really on the edge of burnout? “Stress is really important, and anxiety is what motivates us to do well,” says Murray. “It’s when we’re continually exposed to stress and anxiety that it starts to turn into burnout.”

You’re pre-burnout: What’s next?

“Sometimes they feel the need to be too perfect so they’re having to work very hard to cover up that they’re not quite as good as everyone thinks.” Another therapist Walker says.

However, sometimes the work environment is the problem. According to a 2018 study of 7,500 US workers, burnout comes from unfair treatment at work, an unmanageable workload and not knowing what a person’s role should involve. Workers were also stressed out by a lack of support from their manager and punreasonable time pressure.

Whatever the cause of your burnout, Murray’s top tip is to be kind to yourself.

In Murray’s experience, a key driver of burnout is today’s culture of wanting it all. Often it’s just not possible to have a healthy social life and complete a big project at the same time. She says it’s vital to prioritize and not expect too much of yourself; when others seem like the perfect boss, parent and friend all at the same time, they’re probably misleading us.

If you feel that you might be close to joining the burnout club, take a step back, figure out what’s going wrongand let yourself off the hook.

【題目】November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States. A "veteran" is anyone who has served in the armed forces. The term "veteran" is not just for those who have served in wars. It describes anyone who has ever been in the army.

On November11, people hold ceremonies(儀式) and parades(游行) to mark Veterans Day. Public officials take part in the events. Army bands play. And soldiers fire guns into the air to remember those who died in service to their country.

The history of Veterans Day relates to World War I. Many people at the time called it "the war to end all wars." The United States entered the fighting in Europe in 1917. Over 13 million men and women were reported for duty in the army. World War I ended at 11 o'clock in the morning on November 11, 1918. The following year, President Woodrow Wilson signed an official statement to celebrate November 11th as Armistice Day in the United States. It would be a day to honor the men and women who had served in the U.S. armed forces during the war. In 1926, Congress made Armistice Day a national holiday.

But new problems were on the way. Soon, everyone knew that World War I would not be the war to end all wars. In all, more than 4,000,000 Americans served in the armed forces during the first World War. And 16 million would serve during the second one.

Armistice Day in 1945 was a special day in the United States. Germany had surrendered in May 1945 and Japan in August. Most men and women who had served in the war were home. So, instead of honoring just veterans of World War I, Americans also honored veterans of World War II. In 1954, Congress decided to change the name of Armistice Day. The holiday became Veterans Day.

1Who does Veterans Day honour?

A. Those who lost their lives in wars.

B. Those who served in the wars.

C. Those who served in the army.

B. Because Woodrow Wilson signed a statement to celebrate it.

C. Because the USA entered the war on November 11.

D. Because November 11 was once called Armistice Day.

3What can we learn from the passage?

A. Women were not included in the army in the wars.

B. Armistice Day was not a national holiday until 1954.

C. Armistice Day was at first to honor those who died in the war.

D. More people from the USA served in World War II than in World War I.

4Which can be the best title of the passage?

A. Celebrations on Veterans Day

B. Meaning of Veterans Day

C. Veterans Day---a Day for the Army
