In an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and timeconsuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.

Europe,on the whole, has the world’s most restrictive(嚴格的) laws on animal experiments. Even so,its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and,as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive(全面的) data than America.

Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis(假設) being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals’ lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.

Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes uffer. Europe’s new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.

【1】What is the main idea of this passage?

A. The success of animal experiments should be ensured.

B. A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced.

C. Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals.

D. Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.

【2】Which of the following statements is true about animals used in the lab?

A. America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year.

B. Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all.

C. Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does.

D. Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year.

【3】Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments?

A. Statistical studies. B. Computer models.

C. DNA planted in animals. D. Tissue from dead animals.

【4】What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments?

A. They are not made known to the public.

B. They are made into teaching materials.

C. They are collected for future publication.

D. They are not removed from the research topic list.

【4】A

根據第三段第二句“Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use.”

根據“its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats”排除B;根據“Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading...., the true figure is much higher”可知,A項錯誤;”Japan and China have even less comprehensive data than America.”

根據第三段第二句“Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended.”

根據倒數第二段的“If their findings do not fit the hypothesis being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals’ lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.” 故選A。

When I was a kid, I was just like every other kid. As usual, I liked being with friends and having fun. But I didn’t like school much. I didn’t like the rule of learning, studying, memorizing, etc. Too much work. As I got into high school, things changed for me. I started reading a lot of books. Books taught me about life and helped me learn about the world. I read around 30 books during each senior year. I learned to love reading then.

Little did I know at that time that I would write books by myself. I’ve written 7 books since then. One book I wrote, Powerful Attitudes, was a huge success within a network marketing company in the USA.

When I was 17 years old, I took about a dozen guitar lessons. I fell in love with guitar music no matter if it is blues, rock, flamenco or classical. I’ve attended concerts and have heard some great guitarists through the years. Recently, I bought myself a piano and began to learn to play it. I’ve made great progress. My knowledge of music and playing guitar has helped me a lot in learning the piano.

Last week, I employed a Chinese teacher to teach me Chinese. I’ve learned about 200 words in my first week. I’m inspired and motivated to learn. In fact, I feel a bit obsessed, thinking of learning Chinese. It’s like a mountain I want to climb and conquer. I’m 56 years old and my love to learn it runs deep in my heart, mindspan> and soul.

What I certainly learned while growing up is to love learning. I never want to stop learning. I never want to stop studying people, life, processes and new things. I think the openness of admitting what you don’t know, makes you a good learner. You never lie to yourself or to others about your knowledge and experience. I have the attitude that if I don’t know something, I will learn to know it.

A. He fell in love with reading when he was a child.

Doctor Seuss was the name used by Theodor Seuss Geisel, who was famous because of the books he wrote for children. They combine funny words, funny pictures, and social opinion.

Theodor Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. After graduating from Dartmouth College in 1924, he spent a year studying literature(文學) at Oxford University in England. When he returned to the United States in 1927, he hoped to become a writer of serious literature. But the economic depression(經濟蕭條) in the United States delayed his dreams of becoming a serious writer. In 1937, he wrote his first book for children, which is called “And To Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street.” However, a number of publishers refused to accept it. They said it was too different from ordinary books. A friend finally published it. Soon other successful books followed. Over the years he wrote more than forty children’s books, which were fun to read. Yet his books sometimes dealt with serious subjects including equality, responsibility and protecting the environment.

Doctor Seuss had a strong desire to help children. In 1954, Life magazine published a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children’s books were not interesting. Reading the report, Doctor Seuss decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. To make his book easy to read, he used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish.

In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote “The Cat in the Hat”, in which he used less than two hundred twenty-five words. This was the number of words a six-year-old should be able to read. The book was an immediate success. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today many adults say it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of the book made him want to write more books for children. He started a series called Beginner Books, which remain well liked among children today.

In 1984, Mr. Geisel won a Pulitzer Prize for children’s literature. At that time he had been writing children’s books for almost fifty years. He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents, and his influence remains through the books he wrote. Experts say his books helped change the way American children learned to read.

【1】What was Theodor Geisel’s dream when he returned from England?

2What did Theodor Geisel decide to do after he read the report published in Life magazine?

3Why did Theodor Geisel finally set his simple writing style?
