【題目】China is home to the invention of silk and has a long tradition of producing fine materials for clothing. Not all clothing in ancient or contemporary 當(dāng)代的) China is made of silk, however. In fact, silk was only available to the wealthy classes(階級) for much of China's history. Until the introduction of cotton during the Ming Dynasty, from the 14th to the 17th century, the poorer classes wore rough clothing made from fibers (纖維).

In ancient China, the tunic(無袖長袍)was particularly popular . Called hanfu(漢服), both men and women could be seen wearing tunics made of different materials. Women's tunics were long and loose(寬松的), extending all the way down to their feet and often cinched with a belt or rope to get tighter(緊). Men's tunics were shorter, usually only extending down to their knees. During the winter, both men and women would wear cotton jackets for warmth. In the winter, men would also wear pants (褲子) or ankle-length skirts into their clothes to keep warm and protect their legs against the cold winter conditions.

Contemporary Chinese clothing is now made of many of the same materials as contemporary clothing found in other countries. Much of the traditional Chinese clothing produced now is made of cotton and silk, but generally contemporary Chinese clothing also contains synthetic (合成的) fibers in with the cotton and silk, such as nylon (尼龍). In addition, linen (亞麻布) is now commonly used in contemporary Chinese clothing, especially during the summer months because it is light and breathable.

【1In ancient China, only wealthy people could afford clothes made from______.

A. silk B. fiber C. cotton D. linen

2Which of the following about hanfu(漢服) is mentioned in the text?

A. It was made from only one material.

B. Men's hanfu was shorter than women's.

C. People didn't wear it until the Ming Dynasty.

D. It was warm enough to help people against cold in the winter.

3The underlined word "cinched" in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to "___".

A. 懸掛 B. 插入 C. 裝飾 D. 拴,綁

4What can we know from the text?

A. Linen is only used to make Chinese summer clothing.

B. Nylon was one material for ancient Chinese clothing.

C. Lots of contemporary Chinese clothing is made from synthetic fibers.

D. The materials for contemporary Chinese clothing are produced by other countries.

How to protect your ears

You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard. 【1】_So no harm done…right?

Buy noise-canceling headphones. A pair of ear buds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volumes.

___5__You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts or while playing or practicing your own music without changing the quality of the sound.

A. Use earplugs.

B. Keep the volume below 70 percent.

C. If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.

D. Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.

Before you are in need of making a survival shelter, be sure to practice and experiment with a variety of materials and survival plans on a regular basis. Clothing is the first line of shelter protection. 3

Signaling

Signaling allows you to get in touch with people who can rescue you without having to be close by. 4 These include using fire and smoke, flashlights, bright colored clothing and other markers, mirrors, and whistles.

【題目】They wear the latest fashions with the most up-to-date accessories(配飾).Yet these are not girls in their teens or twenties but women in their sixties and seventies.A generation which would once only wear old-fashioned clothes is now favoring the same high street looks worn by those half their age.

Professor Julia Twiggy, a social policy expert, said,“Women over 75 are now shopping for clothes more requently than they did when they were young in the 1960s.In the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matter. It was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years—now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish to.Fashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly.” Professor Twiggy analyzed family expending data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same—about 5 or 6 percent of spending, the amount of clothes bought had risen sharply.

The professor said,“Clothes are now 70 percent cheaper than they were in the 1960s because of the huge expansion of production in the Far East.In the 1960s Leeds was the heart of the British fashion industry and that was where most of the clothes came from, but now almost all of our clothes are sourced elsewhere.Everyone is buying more clothes but in general we are not spending more money on them.’’

Fashion designer Angela Barnard, who runs her own fashion business in London, said older women were much more affected by celebrity style than in previous yers. She said,“When people see stars such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren looking attractive and fashionable in their sixties, they want to follow them.Older women are much more aware of celebrities. There’s also the boom in TV programmers showing people how they can change their look, and many of my older customers do yoga to stay in shape well in their fifties. When I started my business a few years ago,my older customers tended to be very rich, but now they are what I would call ordinary women. It was on Sunday so I didn’t have to go to school as usually. My parents went to the countryside to see my grandparents, left me alone. After finishing my homework, I began to play football at home. All of a sudden, I kicked the ball so hardly that it flew right onto a vase and broke it. It was great favorite of my mother’s. I decided to tell my parents it was the fault of the cat for fear that she should punish me. Therefore, when they got home, I hesitated for a moment and told them that truly happened. Instead of punishing me, they just hoped that I will never make so a foolish mistake again.

Forgiveness

To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.

【1】 Try the following steps:

Calm yourself. 2 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. 3 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.

Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.

4 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.

Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 5 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

A. Why should you forgive?

B. How should you start to forgive?

C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

D. Try to see things from your offender’s angle.

E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.

F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.

G. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.
