【題目】Polar bears are suffering in a much 1 (warm) world.

Polar bears live in environments too cold for most animals. During much of the year, they live and hunt on the frozen Arctic sea ice. Nature has 2 (prepare)them for the cold conditions. But nothing has prepared the bears for the danger 3 threatens the only home they know.

The polar bears’ world is melting. Studies show that the amount of the polar ice 4(have)decreased by 9.8% every 10 years since 1978. Now about 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears live in the Arctic. Polar bears rely 5the sea ice for their survival. “The sea ice is more 6 just this platform that the bears walk over,” says Andrew Derocher, 7 scientist who studies North American polar bear populations. “8 it, they can’t exist.”

Some melting and refreezing of the polar ice is natural. But in a warmer world, these cycles speed up, and bears have less time 9 (hunt). Normally, they have three months in the spring when they gain more weight. The extra fat is used later, when the bears are not 10

【題目】Chokwe Selassie, aged 13, is working hard to help drivers avoid potholes(坑洼). The eighth-grader was inspired to kick off his creation on a recent morning, when his mother was driving him to school. Their car was damaged as it went over a huge pothole in the middle of the street in their hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. He decided to do something about the pothole problem in his city.

Chokwe developed the app with his friends Rodriguez Ratliff and Emmanuel Brooks. When the app detects a pothole, it is highlighted in red. And if you get close to the pothole, your phone will warn you with a beep. Drivers can also use the app to report any potholes and look for other routes they can take to avoid roads that have them.

The app relies on current available information about the streets of Jackson, already stored in a database of the city’s 311 call system. Through the call system, citizens dial 3-1-1 to report non-emergency problems which include potholes. Chokwe and his friends determined that focusing on the 10 busiest streets in Jackson would give them a large enough sample size to test the prototype.

While developing the app, the boys took part in a Minority Male Makers Program sponsored by Verizon and held at Jackson State University. They learned 3D printing and design, and how to create apps. Through the program Chokwe and his friends received encouragement and guidance.

Although the app isn’t yet available for sale, Chokwe is already looking for ways to improve the app. He hopes to add more to it until it spreads all over the country.

1Why is the car damage mentioned in the first paragraph?

A. To scold the road builders.

B. To introduce their bad luck.

C. To tell the inspiration for the app.

D. To warn the danger of careless driving.

2What is the app used to do?

A. Warn drivers about potholes.

B. Help drivers obey traffic rules.

C. Stop drivers using mobile phones.

D. Tell drivers to avoid red lights.

3How does the app work through the 311 call system?

A. By replying to citizens’ calls.

B. By broadcasting traffic accidents.

C. By settling non- emergency problems.

D. By using its information about potholes.

4Which can be Chokwe’s future target?

A. Encouraging more kids to create apps.

B. Taking part in more learning programs.

C. Making the app available for sale online.

D. Making the app include streets nationwide.

【題目】How to Care for Your Ears?

Ears not only let us hear, but they also play a role in maintaining our balance, which is vital to our ability to function in daily life. Yet, we ignore them. We can't even see our ears, except in a mirror. We take it for granted what they do for us day in and day out—until we notice something wrong, such as when an earache strikes or when we start having to ask people to repeat what they say.1

◆Clean your ear with a washcloth—covered finger only.

Never put anything inside your ear canal, including cotton swabs(藥簽).2

◆Leave earwax(耳垢)alone.

Wax is your ear's way of eliminating(消除)anything foreign that gets into the ear canal.3If you find you have too much earwax, use a few drops of earwax remover in the canal. After a few minutes, wash the ear with warm water.

◆Avoid noisy places.

Rock concerts and construction sites are just a few places that frequently have noise levels that can damage hearing. Any place where you have to shout to be heard should be avoided.

4

Be careful not to play MP3 too loud, especially if using earphone.

◆Be careful with illness and medications.

Respiratory(呼吸的)illnesses should be treated to avoid their spread to the ears. Certain medications can damage hearing, so follow the directions carefully before taking them.

【題目】Edmund Percival Hillary was one of the greatest explorers of the twentieth century. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1919. He discovered an interest in mountain climbing while he was still in high school and began climbing New Zealand's Southern Alps.

Like his father, Hillary earned his living as a beekeeper. However, he continued to climb mountains. His goal was to climb Mt. Everest, which is the highest mountain in the world. By the early 1950s, several expeditions(探險(xiǎn)隊(duì))had attempted to reach the summit of Everest, but all had failed. Then, in 1953, Hillary and a Nepalese climber named Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to reach the top of the world.

Hillary's spirit of exploration was not satisfied. He joined an expedition to Antarctica and reached the South Pole in 1958. He also made an expedition up the Ganges River to its source in the Himalayas. Sir Edmund Hillary was a brave adventurer. He went where no man or woman had gone before.

Although Hillary was best known as the young man who climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest in the 1950s, he continued his journeys to far-off places into his senior years. For instance, in his mid-sixties Hillary flew to the North Pole with Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Moreover, Hillary authored many books. However, his most lasting gift, perhaps, was the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust(信托基金). It raised millions of dollars and contributed to schools, hospitals and many other public improvements in the Sherpa villages of Nepal. In January 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary died at the age of 88.

Despite being a great adventurer and known for the treasure he left Sir Edmund Hillary always modestly referred to himself as a simple beekeeper from New Zealand.

1Hillary was interested in ________ when he was in high school.

A. mountain-climbing B. bee-keeping

C. money-raising D. story-writing

2Hillary became well-known because ________.

3We can learn from the passage that Hillary is ________.

B. talented and honest
