【答案】

Dear Li Hua,

After reading your letter, I’m sorry to know that you have some difficulty communicating with your parents. I have to say that you are not alone facing such a problem. It’s a common problem shared by many, whose cause lies in what we call “generation gap”. Here are a few suggestions for your reference:

First, it helps if you don’t hide your feelings. You can make it a routine to share your thoughts with your parents. Second, it is important to convince them you have tried your best. It is not their fault to place high expectations on their child. I believe they will be satisfied with you as long as they know you have tried whatever you can to live up to their standard. Besides, it should be a good idea to love them. There is no one who loves you more than your parents in the world. Whatever you are, they will always be there for you. So love them, and love can heal everything.

I hope you will find these suggestions helpful.

Yours sincerely,

Brad

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. 【1】 When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. 2 One of them exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak.3 But all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means— practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? 4 It’s because those who cannot read or write have to remember things. They cannot write them down in a little notebook and they have to remember dates, time and prices, names, songs and stories, so their memory is being exercised the whole time 5 .

A. What do you think of it?

B. Yet many people do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way.

C. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever.

D. So if you want a good memory, practice remembering.

E. Someone else says that he is poor in health.

F. Why is this?

G. The position is exactly the same as that of two people.

【題目】Juac has made the leap from being an African refugee (難民) to a chess champion in the United States. His job is to share his expertise(專長(zhǎng)) with students in schools, chess camps and other events.

During Sudan's civil war in the mid-1980s, Juac was forced out of the country with 20,000 0ther so -called Lost Boys. He fled to Ethiopia, then to Kenya staying in a refugee camp for eight years, where he learned to play chess.

Juac described a dangerous journey in which half the boys didn't survive. To eat, they had to kill wild animals.

"There were animals on the way. It was about a thousand miles and sometimes there was no water. When we were in Ethiopia, we had to cross the river and there a lot drowned."

Juac arrived in the United States in 2004 and began working as a security guard. Winning a chess tournament gave him this teaching opportunity. Juac believes chess helps prepare young people for life.

"Some kids are not interested, so it's your job to make them like the game, to explain them what chess is going to help them with." He said. "Like, I can tell, this game will give you patience, and help with your math skills."

Julie Cathone, a second grade teacher in Jackson Public School, agrees. The School's principal, Meghan Kelley, said Juac and chess have made a big difference.

"What a role model. I mean when you think about just overcoming, and finding what you love and turning that into your life's work."

Juac said he enjoys the freedom he has in the United States. But his passion is playing and teaching chess to youngsters. His boss, Michael Propper , said Juac has one great advantage.

"I think he's believable. I think they look at him and he's so unassuming that they feel like they can do what he's doing and be a person as he is too."

Ju ac still has a big goal ahead of him-becoming an international chess master. With his skill and patience, Propper and his peers have no doubt that will happen.

【題目】No poem should ever be discussed or “analyzed”, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end, so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.

All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation”(解讀) of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on film, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching can not replace the student and teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analyzing” it, if there isn’t time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is “ a criticism of life”, and “ a heightening(提升) of life”. It is “an approach to the truth of feeling”, and it “can save your life”. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.

I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

【1】To have a better understanding of a poem, one should________.

A. discuss it with others B. analyze it by oneself

C. copy it down in a notebook D. practise reading it aloud

【2】According to the writer, one of the purposes of teaching English is to get students________.

A. to understand life. B. to enjoy poetry.

C. to become teachers. D. to become poets

【3】What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply?

A. More importance should be attached to the teaching of poetry.

B. Poetry is more important than any other subject.

C. One cannot enjoy life fully without an understanding of poetry

D. Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses
