One year ago, I had a special English lesson hold at the railway station. It was quite different from the regular English classes we were familiar to, for we had no textbooks, no blackboard and no fixed seats.

Gathered at the entrance of the station, we were told to collect as much English words and sentence as possible there. Curious and excited, we walked around the station and looked everywhere, search for any information in English. Whenever an English word comes into sight, the class would burst into the cheers as if we had discovered a new world. With the Chinese translation and vividly pictures, we could figure out its meaning with ease.

Now, this unforgettable lesson still encourages me to be an active learner where I go.

【題目】Balloon Volleyball

It’s a rainy, dark day and there’s nothing to do. You don’t feel like sitting quietly but you are not allowed to make a lot of noise. What can you do for fun? Try balloon volleyball.

Items needed for this game:

·a balloon (or two, in case the first one bursts)

·some ropes

·two chairs

·at least two people and a room

Set up the room. If you’re in the living room, or a family room, be sure to move all the furniture out of the way. Get two chairs and set them in the middle, outer edges(邊緣)of the room. They should be at the same place where you put a volleyball net. Turn them so that the seat is facing the wall, not the “playing” space. Tie the rope onto the top of the chair, and run the rest of the rope to the other chair. Now tie it on this chair at the same place as the first chair. You can decide the “out-of-bounds”(出界) lines, if you want to have them, but they really are not necessary in this game.

Blow up the balloon. Choose sides. You will play this game on your knees (at least until they start hurting and you want to stand). Each side must get the balloon over the rope in three hits. If it does not get over, the other side gets the balloon and a point. This game becomes more difficult because you must play without talking.

You can also add other rules to make it more difficult; for example, you can only use your left hand or only your right hand to hit the balloon.

Continue playing until one side gets 10 points. You can make your game longer or shorter by changing the number of points it takes to win.

This is a fun way to get your energy out, have fun, and not make too much noise on a rainy, stay-in-the-house day.

1What do we know about the balloon volleyball?

A. One room is enough for it. B. It is played only indoors.

C. It must be played quietly. D. At least two balloons are needed.

2What is the function of the chairs in this game?

A. To make the playing area. B. To hold the rope up as the net.

C. For the players to rest during breaks. D. For people to sit and watch the game.

3Which of the following rules can make the game harder?

A. Play on knees.

B. Play with a lot of noise.

C. Use only your left hand to hit the balloon.

D. Get the balloon over the rope in three hits.

【題目】The American newspaper has been around for about three hundred years. In 1721, the printer James Franklin, Benjamin's older brother, started the New England Courant, and that was what we might recognize today as a real newspaper. He filled his paper with stories of adventure, articles on art, on famous people, and on all sorts of political subjects.

Three centuries after the appearance of Franklin's Courant, few believe that newspapers in their present printed form will remain alive for long. Newspaper companies are losing advertisers, readers, market value, and in some cases, their sense of purpose at a speed that would not have been imaginable just several years ago. The chief editor of the Times said recently, "At places where they gather, editors ask one another, ‘How are you?’, as if they have just come out of the hospital or a lost law case." An article about the newspaper appeared on the website of the Guardian, under the headline "NOT DEAD YET."

Perhaps not, but the rise of the Internet, which has made the daily newspaper look slow and out of step with the world, has brought about a real sense of death. Some American newspapers have lost 42% of their market value in the past three years. The New York Times Company has seen its stock (股票) drop by 54% since the end of 2004, with much of the loss coming in the past year. A manager at Deutsche Bank suggested that stock - holders sell off their Times stock.

The Washington Post Company has prevented the trouble only by changing part of its business to education; its testing and test-preparation service now brings in at least half the company's income.

1What can we learn about the New England Courant?

A. It is mainly about the stock market.

B. It carries articles by political leaders.

C. It marks the beginning of newspapers.

D. It remains a successful newspaper in America.

2What can we infer about the newspaper editors?

A. They often accept readers' suggestions.

B. They care a lot about each other's health.

C. They stop doing business with advertisers.

D. They face great difficulties in their business.

3Which of the following found a new way for its development?

A. The Washington Post. B. The Guardian.

C. The New York Times. D. New England Courant.

4How does the author seem to feel about the future of newspapers?

A. Satisfied. B. Hopeful. C. Surprised. D. Worried.

How do native speakers truly feel when speaking with non-native English speakers? It seems that1(break) English annoys them. However, they keep being really nice when speaking with non-native speakers. I wonder how they really feel when doing so.

I think it would depend2the native English speakers. Some people are just3(easy) annoyed.

Personally, I study Spanish. When I hear someone4(attempt) English, I am patient with them because I know5difficult it is to talk in a non-native tongue. I also know English is very difficult6(learn), and that increases my respect for their efforts. I’m a patient person by nature.

The situation matters too. If I were waiting7(table) on a super crowded day and really8(need) to do about a dozen different things, I might become upset at having to wait for someone to struggle while ordering his meal.

There also exists the9(possible) that what is considered as annoyance is not truly annoyance. I might frown (皺眉) while listening to a non-native speaker, 10that would be because I am concentrating and listening hard to understand him. It wouldn’t mean I’m at all annoyed.
