【題目】We humans spend about one-third of life asleep. Sleep helps us stay healthy, and it also helps our brain remember. Our brains need good sleep to remember what we do and learn during the other two thirds of our life when we are awake. Besides keeping us healthy, some new research shows that a good night’s sleep helps make us more intelligent.

Researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found that sleep helps improve brain performance by shrinking synapses in the brain. A synapse is the area where cells pass messages to other cells.

Cirelli is a leading scientist at the school’s Center for Sleep and Consciousness. She found that sleep is when the human brain mixes information it has learned while awake into its general collection of knowledge. However, the brain forgets unimportant details. This forgetting is important. It makes space for new learning and new memories.

Cirelli said that the Center’s research began with this hypothesis: We sleep so that our brain can repair and refresh itself. She said the idea seems simple and reasonable. However, testing and discovering how it works has been extremely difficult. Cirelli and Center director Giulio Tononi have been trying to prove the connection between sleep and the brain’s synapses since 2003. Cirelli said the researchers knew that “stronger synapses are also bigger.” So, they began their study by “measuring the size of the synapses” in the brain.

They also knew that during sleep, the brain checks on all its synapses and resets itself for the next day. The team wanted to see if the synapses of the brain are bigger after being awake all day and smaller after a good night’s sleep. Synapses are only about 20-40 nanometers wide. So, the team looked for changes in these already tiny spaces between nerve cells. The team had lo wail until improvements in laboratory technology made it possible to see these tiny changes.

Cirelli says they found that synapse size and strength are upset by being awake and restored by sleeping. She says our synapses shrink as our brains clean themselves during sleep. We wake up refreshed and ready to fill those synapses with new information.

1Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A. Sleep can only keep us healthy.

B. Sleep can help our brain function better.

C. Sleep can mix all the information.

D. Sleep can take up two-thirds of our life.

2What does it refer to in Paragraph 4?

A. The measuring the size of the synapses.

B. The space for new learning and new memories.

C. The way our brain can repair and refresh itself.

D. The connection between sleep and the brain’s synapses.

【題目】An Oceans Vacuum

There’s a collection of plastic trash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It’s bigger than Texas-and growing. The way to clean it up now is to catch it with nets. That is both costly and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project proposes 62-mile-long floating barriers that would use natural currents to trap trash. If next year’s trials succeed, a full cleanup operation would aim to start in 2020. It could reduce the trash by 42% over 10 years.

This year, they came out with their solution: the FlyEase. The basketball shoe can be fastened with one hand. A pair of Nike FlyEase shoes sells for $130.

【題目】It’s easy to spot signs of physical suffering, but much emotional pain can be easily masked. 1 “We don’t tend to have conversations about mental well-being,” says Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, a clinic psychologist. Simply asking someone “How are you” may just get “Fine, thank you”, says Van Dahlen. “It’s important to be aware of what could lead to somebody needing help they’re afraid to ask for,” she adds. The following are four signs a friend might need help.

2

If you sense something different about the way your friend is acting — maybe he’s not smiling much these days, for instance — trust your feelings and reach out. “Try saying, ‘I see these things. I care about you. Can I be of help?’”, Van Dahlen says.

He’s unusually unhappy or annoyed.

3 “It may take more than one time to follow up if you’re talking to someone who is upset,” Van Dahlen says, “but if a friend responds with anger, that could mean you’re onto something.”

He’s less put together than usual.

Drinking more and ignoring personal hygiene (衛(wèi)生) can be signs that someone is in trouble. Don’t consider these behaviors are nothing. 4 He seems overwhelmed (壓倒) by life.

No one is happy all the time, but if your once optimistic friend can’t find anything to be hopeful about, he may be having thoughts of worthlessness, sadness and something negative. “5” says Van Dahlen, “so that more people can get the help they need.”

A. He’s acting a bit more withdrawn.

B. He doesn’t seem like himself lately.

C. Instead treat them as a sign to care for your friend.

D. Getting angry quickly and easily can be a sign that something is wrong.

E. It’s a constant effort to bring into the open discussions about mental health.

F. Many people avoid talking about it no matter how close they are to someone.

【題目】Thanks to expensive data fees, you might be tempted to log onto that free public Wi-Fi service while you’re out and about. 1

“Think about the cost of being connected all the time. Nothing is free,” David Lee, a product manager for Norton, told CNBC. “2” The Harvard Business Review agrees: “You’re taking a risk every time you log on to a free network in a coffee shop, hotel lobby, or airport lounge.”

3 According to a survey by the company Symantic, 87 percent of U.S. consumers have used a public internet connection. And it was found that over 70 percent of them checked their personal email through public Wi-Fi, while 11 percent logged onto their online banking account.

No matter how safe the Wi-Fi connection seems to be, using it leaves your computer or smart phone easy to be attacked by hackers and data thieves. You don’t really know who owns and monitors that router, nor who has access to the data that posses through it. Not to mention, hackers have dozens of ways to compromise public Wi-Fi accounts, from creating a network that appears legal to creating pop-ups that trick the user into downloading malware (惡意軟件) onto their computers.4

To protect yourself against hackers, experts say your best defense is a virtual private network (VPN), which encrypts (加密) your online activity. You can download your very own VPN through an app for Apple or Android devices, or by using the free encryption service CyberGhost.5 But before you even start browsing, use this website to make a password that keeps you safe from hackers.

A. These are all of the tricks hackers use to hack your Internet security.

B. That can save you a lot of trouble.

C. The biggest threat is that your data and identity could be completely exposed.

D. Don’t let convenience outweigh the consequences, though.

E. Setting up firewalls and antivirus software will also defend your computer against hackers.

F. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the dangers.

G Hackers usually steal data in this way.
