Mask-Wearing, Common in Asia, Spreads in the West

PARIS — Until a few weeks ago, Asian tourists were 1 only mask wearers in Paris, 2(cause) puzzlement or suspicion from French locals or even hostility as the coronavirus began sweeping across Europe.

Four days into a national lockdown to stem the outbreak, the French government spokeswoman, Sibeth Ndiaye, warned that face masks were so 3 (familiar) that wearing them was too difficult technically and could even be “counterproductive (適得其反).” Even Thursday morning, when 4 (ask) whether she wore a mask or made her children wear one, she said, “Oh, no, not at all.”

This taboo is falling fast, not only in France but across Western countries, after increasing 5(cry) from experts who say the practice is effective in curbing the coronavirus pandemic.

The shift for Western nations is profound and has had to overcome not merely the logistical challenges of securing enough masks, which are significant enough, but also a deep 6 (culture) resistance and even stigma (污名) associated with mask-wearing, 7 some Western leaders described flatly as “alien.”

8 (seem), it won’t be for much longer. After discouraging people from wearing face masks, France, like the United States, has begun urging its citizens 9 (wear) basic or homemade ones outside. And some parts of Europe are moving faster than the United States by requiring masks instead 10 simply recommending their use.

故填the。

分析句子可知,?dòng)詞cause與邏輯主語(yǔ)“Asian tourists were the only mask wearers in Paris,”之間是主動(dòng)關(guān)系,應(yīng)該用動(dòng)詞的現(xiàn)在分詞作狀語(yǔ)。

結(jié)果狀語(yǔ)從句結(jié)構(gòu)是:so+形容詞+that(如此…… 因此將形容詞familiar(熟悉的)變成形容詞unfamiliar(不熟悉的)。

由完整的句子“when she was asked whether she wore a mask or made her children wear one,”可知,省略主語(yǔ)和謂語(yǔ)之后,應(yīng)該填asked。

故填which

副詞作狀語(yǔ),修飾整個(gè)句子“it won’t be for much longer.”。

動(dòng)詞搭配urge sb. to do sth. 故填to wear

故填of

Increased use of the Internet and mobile phones are undermining pupils’ capacity for independent study and promoting poor grammar, it was claimed.

Cranfield School of Management found almost six in 10 schoolchildren were copying information directly from websites for homework tasks without properly reading it.

More than a quarter thought it was an acceptable practice, even though they know it was considered plagiarism (剽竊). The study, based on a sample of around 260 pupils aged from 11 to 18 at a secondary school in the Midlands, raised fresh concerns that modern technology was having a destructive effect on young people. Andrew Kakabadse, professor of International Management Development at Cranfield, said, “Our research shows that technology obsession prevents spelling skills, encourages plagiarism, and disturbs classroom learning.

“Despite school policies restricting mobile phone usage, students use the phone frequently, with the majority making calls from the toilets. The mobile phone continues to be a main channel of social communication during the school day.”

The report revealed that so-called “text-speak’’ was increasingly finding it was into pupils’ school work. Three in 10 students admit to using text message shortcuts, such as “ruok” in essays and classroom tasks.

It followed a study earlier this year that found almost half of teachers failed to understand some pupils’ writing because it was so full of confusing language. Phrases such as “innit” and “Gr8” were regularly found in school work, it was claimed. The Cranfield study found that mobile use was so common that many pupils chose to ignore school rules on phones.

More than a third said they would use their mobile in class, while nearly three quarters said they would not even make an excuse to leave class to answer a phone call.

Harper Lee was an American novelist widely known for To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and has become a classic of modern American literature. The 1962 film adaptation starring Gregory Peck won three Academy Awards.

For decades, the book was Lee’s only major work of published fiction, but it was hugely influential for generations of US readers. It has sold more than 10 million copies, and is one of the most widely taught novels in the US schools. In 2007 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to literature.

Lee wanted to live a simple life and was never comfortable with the attention the novel won her, and she practically disappeared from public life after it appeared. The world, however, continued waiting for a new novel from her, and on occasion she suggested that she had a story in progress.

In 2015, a book did come out. Go Set a Watchman was more of a first draft, featuring Scout, the young girl who was the main character of To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman tells a story of Scout as an adult. Accusations arose that the 89-year-old Lee was not able to agree to the manuscript’s release, and that various parties had signed on her behalf.

Though Lee moved to New York in 1949, she spent many years guarding her privacy (隱私) in Monroeville, which served as the clear inspiration for the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird.

In 2007, Lee suffered a stroke (中風(fēng)), but recovered and later settled in Monroeville permanently to care for her sister, Alice, who died in 2014. She was said to eat breakfast every morning at the same fast-food spot, and was friendly with her neighbors. The countless Americans knew her only through her works, and they will undoubtedly miss her.

1What can be learned about Harper Lee from the first two paragraphs?

A.She was regarded the greatest writer in America.

B.She made great contributions to American literature.

C.She once starred in a film adapted from her own novel.

A.She tried to get out of accusations.

B.She wanted to write another novel.

C.She intended to avoid being bothered.

D.She wasn’t comfortable with her novel’s influence.

3What can we learn about Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman?

A.It tells her own life story.

B.It is adapted into a famous film.

C.It won her lots of honors and awards.

D.It continues the story of her earlier one.

4What can be inferred about Harper Lee from the last paragraph?

A.She died of a stroke in 2014.
