Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the 'wash up'. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.
At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(減法) but, extraordinarily ,are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.
Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed.Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.
As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17,over half of them are in debt to family and friends.By this age,26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power.Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.”
The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.
(1)The passage is mainly about _____________.
A.how to manage school lessons
B.how to deal with the financial crisis
C.teaching young people about money
D.teaching students how to study effectively
(2)It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.

C.students have been taught to manage their finances
D.laws on financial education have been effectively carried out
(3)The website and the consumer campaigner joined to _________.
A.instruct the pupils to donate their pocket money
B.promote the connection of schools and families
C.ask the government to dismiss the parliament
D.appeal for the curriculum of financial education
(4)According to Pfeg,___________.
A.it is easy to keep good habits long
B.teenagers spend their money as planned
C.parents are willing to pay the debt for their kids
D.it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone
(5)A poll is mentioned to ___________.

Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.
One important biological factor(因素) that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility(生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and the blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.
They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally get sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men.
Scientists are still not exactly sure how genes influence aging, but they believe they do. Some think that a woman's body cells have a tendency(傾向) to age more slowly than a man's. Others think that a man' s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly.
A. However, women, on average, live longer.
B. The biological factor plays an important part.
C. Women are also helped by their female genes.
D. The female hormones also protect the body in another way.
E. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities.
F. Therefore, women are more healthy than men and can live a better life.
G. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control various body functions.

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,選擇最佳答案。
The iPhone, the iPad: each of Apple's products sounds cool and has become a fad(一時(shí)的風(fēng)尚). Apple has cleverly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” --and many other brands are following suit. The BBC's iPlayer--which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet--used the title in 2008. A lovely bear--popular in the US and UK--that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version(簡(jiǎn)裝本) of London's Independent newspaper was started last week under the name “i”.
In general, single-letter prefixes(前綴) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce(電子商務(wù)) first came into use.
Most “I” products are targeted at(針對(duì)) young people and considering the major readers of Independent's “I”, it's no surprise that they've selected this fashionable name.
But it's hard to see what's so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King's College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, individual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn't have one clear definition(定義),” he says.
“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability (輕便).” adds Thorne.
Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.
Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “I” as one of the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade(十年).
But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.
(1)We can infer that the Independent's "i" is designed at .
A.old readers
B.young readers
C.fashionable women
D.engineers
(2)The underlined word “ambiguous” means ““.
A.popular
B.clear
C.uncertain
D.unique
(3)Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are.
A.portable
B.environmentally friendly
C.advanced
D.recyclable
(4)The writer suggests that.
A.“i” products are often of high quality
B.iTeddy is alive bear
C.the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the products
D.the popularity of “i” products may not last long
