Dear friends,

【答案】Dear friends,

We'd like to share our culture with you by introducing you to the art of Chinese calligraphy.

As you can see, all the Chinese characters hanging here are written with the Four Treasures of the study— writing brush, ink stick, paper and ink slab, which enjoy a long history and a good reputation as well.

For Chinese, calligraphy serves the purpose of conveying thoughts and showing the beauty of the lines. Not only is it a practical technique for writing Chinese characters, but also a unique art which can help purify our souls.

Afterwards, we'll break into groups so that you can join us. I promise you can feel the beauty and power of writing. Please enjoy yourselves!

An Oceans Vacuum

There’s a collection of plastic trash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It’s bigger than Texas-and growing. The way to clean it up now is to catch it with nets. That is both costly and slow. Instead, the Ocean Cleanup Project proposes 62-mile-long floating barriers that would use natural currents to trap trash. If next year’s trials succeed, a full cleanup operation would aim to start in 2020. It could reduce the trash by 42% over 10 years.

This year, they came out with their solution: the FlyEase. The basketball shoe can be fastened with one hand. A pair of Nike FlyEase shoes sells for $130.

【題目】Thanks to expensive data fees, you might be tempted to log onto that free public Wi-Fi service while you’re out and about. 1

“Think about the cost of being connected all the time. Nothing is free,” David Lee, a product manager for Norton, told CNBC. “2” The Harvard Business Review agrees: “You’re taking a risk every time you log on to a free network in a coffee shop, hotel lobby, or airport lounge.”

3 According to a survey by the company Symantic, 87 percent of U.S. consumers have used a public internet connection. And it was found that over 70 percent of them checked their personal email through public Wi-Fi, while 11 percent logged onto their online banking account.

No matter how safe the Wi-Fi connection seems to be, using it leaves your computer or smart phone easy to be attacked by hackers and data thieves. You don’t really know who owns and monitors that router, nor who has access to the data that posses through it. Not to mention, hackers have dozens of ways to compromise public Wi-Fi accounts, from creating a network that appears legal to creating pop-ups that trick the user into downloading malware (惡意軟件) onto their computers.4

To protect yourself against hackers, experts say your best defense is a virtual private network (VPN), which encrypts (加密) your online activity. You can download your very own VPN through an app for Apple or Android devices, or by using the free encryption service CyberGhost.5 But before you even start browsing, use this website to make a password that keeps you safe from hackers.

A. These are all of the tricks hackers use to hack your Internet security.

B. That can save you a lot of trouble.

C. The biggest threat is that your data and identity could be completely exposed.

D. Don’t let convenience outweigh the consequences, though.

E. Setting up firewalls and antivirus software will also defend your computer against hackers.

F. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the dangers.

G Hackers usually steal data in this way.

【題目】Like most of you, I’ve grown up with science putting it into my head that eating Cholesterol (膽固醇) is bad for us. My doctor has scolded me repeatedly for liking high-cholesterol snacks. But now, after 40 years of giving cholesterol such a rap, the scientific experts are reportedly ready to reverse (顛倒) themselves. Suddenly, we’re going to be told that high-cholesterol foods are not bad for us after all.

This isn’t the first time science reverses what it believes to be true, nor will it be the last. To optimists, the fluidity of science’s conclusions is a good thing - prove that science is always correcting itself in light of the very latest information. But a modem society that looks increasingly to science for not just what to eat, but also how to behave and what to think? How can we trust an authority that often changes its mind in extreme ways?

Science’s typical way isn’t limited to matters of nutrition. Go ahead and check it out for yourself by looking at the qualifiers used in the vast majority of honestly written science news articles. You’ll see that the stories are laced with weak words and phrases such as: some, in certain circumstances, probably, perhaps, may, could, tends, suggests, indicates, according to, is linked to, plays a role in. The grave problem I’ve observed over the years is that too often science and its reporters create the impression of certainty when none is proved. The cholesterol story is but one example of that make-believe certainty.

How much should we be concerned about this? A great deal, I believe, given science’s great and growing influence on our lives. At the very least, each of us needs to -understand that the scientific worldview — impressive as it surely is — is built on shifting sands. As Einstein once observed, “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong.”

1The underlined part “giving cholesterol such a rap” (in Para. 1) means the author .

A. always promotes use of cholesterol B. sometimes stands for cholesterol

C. avoids cholesterol generally D. eats cholesterol regularly

2In the eyes of the author, changes in scientific statements .

A. are worrying B. are meaningless

C. are a good thing in a way D. are the major way to improve science

3According to the text, which of the following is NOT the word commonly used in scientific articles?

A. Likely B. Surely

C. Seems D. Appears

4What can be concluded from the passage?

A. Science can blind us.

B. Science need be open to doubt.

C. Science is not as important as thought.

D. Science should be built on experiments.
