2.The 21st century coal technology is a major environmental success story that enables society to balanceimportant energy and economic and environmental goals when it achieves the final goal of making coal power emissions-free( 零排放).
The numbers tell an amazing story:In the United States,coal-fueled electricity has nearly been three times in step with a doubling of GDP since 1970.During the period, coal's efficiency greatly improved, with key emissions rates per megawatt(兆瓦特) hour decreasing by 89 percent.
The next generation of advanced coal technologies continues to build on this progress. The Prairie State Energy Campus in American's Heartland is a prime example.Prairie State provides electricity for 2.5 million families and is the largest new coal-fueled power plant brought on line, starting up in 2012.It's also among the cleanest coal plants in America. Prairie State has invested 1 billion in control technologies, resulting in emissions rates that are about two-thirds the average of the existing U.S.coal fleet.Even carbon dioxide emissions rates are as much as 25 percent lower thanks to plant efficiencies.A single large plant like Prairie State has the equal environmental benefit of taking one million cars off the road.
Prairie State is a clean source of energy, and it's also an engine for economic strength.Over the next 30 years,Prairie State will contribute more than 22 billion to the local economy.
A study by Management Information Services concludes that by replacing older U.S.coal plants with supercritical (超臨界的) technology, the United States will realize about  1,200 billion increase in economic output, create 6 million jobs, add 500 billion in personal income and an additional 200 billion in tax revenues(稅收).
The addition of each advanced supercritical plant can help build energy security and provide stable, affordable electricity in the United States and around the world. The future of the technology is bright:569,000 megawatts of supercritical coal plants are in operation or under construction worldwide. In the United States, about half of all new coal-fueled power plants use high-efficiency,low-emissions technologies and this number continues to grow.
