Perhaps you don’t know your school principal very well. But you might be wise to take him or her seriously. Peking University will enroll students recommended by high principals this year. November 16, 2009 Peking University released a list of 39 high school principals in 10 provinces who have the chance to recommend students. If the students recommended pass a round of interviews by Peking University, they will have an extra 30 points added to their national college entrance exam scores if they apply to the university after the exam. Peking University said the reason behind the move was a desire to give students with comprehensive and special abilities a chance to stand out.

However, a survey conducted by leading Chinese portal sina.com showed 10046 out of 14227 people surveyed were against the new idea. Most said the recommendations were unfair on other students. Xue Yong, a Peking University alumni who is now an assistant professor at Suffolk University told the Qianjiang Evening News the experiment could be dangerous if it is abused. But Qu Jun, former deputy director of Shanghai municipal education commission, said the experiment represents much needed changed to the existing university entrance system, which has been criticized for many years.

Getting to the top is hard enough but staying there is an even greater challenge. And so it could be argued that the 10th World Championship 400m victory by Tonique Williams Darling is even more remarkable than when she struck Olympic gold in 2004.

Coming off the final turn the 27-year-old from the Bahamas held off the attack of both Sanya Richards (USA) and the former World champion Ana Guevara of Mexico displaying a hunger that permanent champions must have.

"I would say that being able to pull off the Olympic title and then come back a year later and pull off the World Championship title has just been a miler coaster (過山車) experience for me," she revealed. "It's really an historical moment for me and for the Bahamas, just to be able to do something like this. And so I feel really humbled and grateful and just overjoyed right now."

"It is not an easy experience. I will tell you, definitely, that in the off-season it was just a struggle to go out there every day and practice because coming off the top races and after the Olympics experience you are just kind of worn out mentally. It's not even physical. So you just go with the season, and work through it, and by the time, like two weeks away from this competition, I was hungry again and ready to be competitive."

Williams Darling credits a support group of friends and family, her husband, Bahamian 400m runner Denis Darling, with keeping her grounded when the natural tendency would be to celebrate and then rest on one's laurels (桂冠,榮譽), Most importantly she credits her Christian faith.

"My life has changed a little bit (since winning the Olympics) but as far as the competition and training it hasn't changed that much,' she declares. "One thing I have tried to do is to train like I have never won anything before. And I think that it was achieved because I could have been lackadaisical (無精打采的) and blown off the season or whatever. I just stayed in there and knew that everybody else was coming after me. That really helped me to stay motivated this season."

1. The underlined words "credit' in paragraph 5 probably means

    A. believe somebody

    B. add money to the bank

    C. attributes her success to those who have supported her

    A. Denis Darling.                         B. Sanya Richards.

    C. Tonique Williams Darling.                D. Ana Guevara.

3. According to the passage we can infer that _________.

    A. the 10th World Championship was held in 2005.

    B. Tonique Williams Darling's husband was her coach.

    C. Denis Darling used to be a winner of the 400m of the Olympics

    D. Sanya Richards only won at the .10~ World Championship

4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Tonique Williams Darling was retired after the 10' World Championship.

    B. Tonique Williams Darling believed that SomeOne would catch up with her if she' did not stay motivated and train hard enough.

    C. Tonique Williams Darling got to the top because she Was hungry before a competition.

    D. According to Tonique Williams Darling, the Olympic title was less important than the World Championship title.

5. Which is the most probable title of the passage?

    A. The harder you work, the more you'll get.

    B. An athlete's successful story.

The Japanese believe that a person has two souls, each necessary. One is the “gentle” soul; the other is the “rough” soul. Sometimes the person uses his gentle soul; sometimes he must use his rough soul. He does not favor his “gentle” soul; neither does he fight his “rough” soul. Human nature in itself is good, Japanese philosophers insist, and a human being does not need to fight any part of himself. He has only to learn how to use each soul properly at the appropriate times. Virtue for the Japanese consists in fulfilling one’s obligations to others. Happy endings, either in life or in fiction, are neither necessary nor expected, since the fulfillment of duty provides the satisfying end, whatever the tragedy it inflicts (遭受,承受). And duty includes a person’s obligations to those who have conferred benefits upon him and to himself as an individual of honor. He develops through this double sense of duty a self-discipline which is at once permissive and rigid, depending on the area in which it is functioning.

The process of acquiring this self-discipline begins in childhood. A Japanese child is given his own identity very early! If I were to define in a word the attitude of the Japanese toward their children I would put it in one succinct (簡潔的) word – “respect”. Love? Yes, abundance of love, warmly expressed  from the moment he is put to his mother’s breast. For mother and child this nursing of her child is important psychologically.

Rewards are frequent, a bit of candy bestowed ( 給予) at the right moment, an inexpensive toy…As the time comes to enter school, however, discipline becomes firmer. To bring shame to the family is the greatest shame for the child.

What is the secret of the Japanese teaching of self-discipline? It lies, I think, in the fact that the aim of all teaching is the establishment of habit. Rules are repeated over, and continually practiced until obedience becomes instinctive. This repetition is enhanced by the expectation of the elders. They expect a child to obey and to learn through obedience. The demand is gentle at first and tempered to the child’s tender age. It is no less gentle as time goes on, but certainly it is increasingly inexorable (不可阻擋的).

1. The main purpose of the passage is to discuss_________.

   A. the belief system of the Japanese people  B. Japanese view of happiness

   C. Japanese view of duty                 D. self-discipline of the Japanese people

2. What can be inferred according to the Japanese belief system?

   A. Some people have two different souls.

   B. Some people are born evil.                C. One should try to achieve the happy ending.

   D. Duty is central in Japanese view of virtue.

3. In the teaching of self-discipline the Japanese emphasize _________.

   A. obligations to one’s family and relations.

   B. early tolerant training combined with restrictive movement

   C. heavy external (外界的) control including strict punishment

   D. a permissive atmosphere almost until adulthood

4. How do the Japanese teach their children of self-discipline?

   A. They lie to their children about the benefit of self-discipline.

   B. They develop their children’s habit of obedience through various teachings.

   C. They rely on the important role of schools.

   D. They use rewards to set good samples of self-discipline.

5. What does the underlined word “It”in the last sentence refer to?

   A. The demand.   B. The age.   C. The obedience.   D. The establishment.
