【題目】A ten-year-old from Howell, Michigan is being praised as a hero thanks to his persistence (堅(jiān)持) that led to saving the life of an elderly neighbor. The event happened late in an evening when Danny DiPietro was being driven home from hockey practice by his mom.

That’s when the young boy noticed an open garage (車庫(kù)) and a figure (身影) that he believed was a dog outside an apartment building near his house. Given the freezing cold weather, the young boy got a feeling that something was not right. But instead of dismissing it like most kids his age would have, he insisted that his mother, Dawn, find out what was going on. Dawn tried to make Danny believe that no one would leave a dog out in such cold weather, but he refused to take no for an answer.

Dawn finally gave in and decided to drive to the area with the family dog and see if there was any truth to Danny’s hunch (直覺(jué)).Sure enough, as she got closer to the apartment building she noticed a garage that was wide open and someone waving madly for help. Upon getting there, she realized that it was not a dog the young boy had seen, but Kathleen St. Onge. The 80-year-old had fallen down on some ice in her garage and had been lying there for two hours, unable to get up.

Dawn rushed home to get her husband to help and called 911. The two then returned with some blankets to cover Ms. St. Onge, while they waited for the ambulance (救護(hù)車) to arrive. 【題目】At 13, Hawa Abdulai Yorke left her family’s home, in Ghana, Africa, to live with an aunt who promised to send her to school. Instead, the aunt put Yorke to work as her maid(傭人). Determined to go to school, Yorke returned home and began selling water in a nearby city to raise money for her education. However, her father spent the money she had earned on a motorcycle.

Yorkers story is familiar to girls growing up in Ghana. There, a girl’s place is in the home. Educating girls is considered a waste of money.

“It happens more than it should, where parents have money to send their girls to school but choose not to,” says Ryan Roach, a volunteer in Ghana, where nearly 55% of girls are not allowed to attend secondary school. Cultural beliefs say education is not a wise investment (投資).

The White House’s Let Girls Learn is working to change this view of girls’ education, in Ghana and in countries worldwide. Former First Lady Michelle Obama says parents have to be persuaded that girls’ education is a better investment than household labor. A study shows that for every year of secondary-school education, a girl’s earning power increases by 18%. Today, Let Girls Learn works in 13 countries, and there are plans to expand the program. Recently, Let Girls Learn hosted a 24-hour event to come up with creative solutions for the barriers (障礙) to girls’ education.

Yorke, now 22, is about to finish high school. Thanks to Let Girls Learn, she plans to attend college and study computer science. She says working alongside college students at the Let Girls Learn event strengthened her determination. “I’m focused on my books,” says Yorke. “I know if I study hard, I, too, can go to university and live a happy life.”

1What was the attitude of Yorkers aunt towards girls attending school?

A. She was against it. B. She had no idea of it.

C. She was in favor of it. D. She considered it hard work.

2According to Ryan Roach, the reason for girls not receiving enough education is that

A. they are too busy to go to school

B. their families are too poor to afford it

C. there are few secondary schools for girls

D. cultural beliefs prevent girls from attending school

3What can we learn about Let Girls Learn?

A. It has spread all over the world.

B. It is a Ghana-based organization.

C. It aims to offer free education to girls.

D. It has got support from Michelle Obama

4What’s Yorke’s next plan?

A. To further her studies.

B. To join in Let Girls Learn.

C. To write some books for girls.

D. To get a computer-related job.

【題目】People always feel headache about academic writing.Jennifer Ahern-Dodson provides some suggestions with some students and teachers. She asks about their earlier writing experiences. Were they negative or positive? She advises that you are not alone if you have had problems with your writing. She says everyone struggles with writing.

“Writing is hard. All writers struggle at some point. And even if writing has come easily for you,at some point in your work as a student, that eventually you’re going to hit a roadblock. So it’s really important to take a moment to think about their past writing experiences. And when the writing was going well, what was happening? When the writing wasn’t going well, what was happening?”

She says most people’s negative writing experiences happened because a very specific formula is required for a paper including an exact length.”And so they primarily focus on,and worry about, what the final product has to look like, like how many pages for a research essay?Or if it is in the second or third language, you know, punctuation and grammar, like whether it gets communicated in the right language.

Another problem can arise when the need to do well on a paper is extremely important.“...like a timed essay exam,or a college application essay,or a research paper that is at the end of the semester, and it’s tied to the entire grade for the class. So worrying about what will happen if they don’t do well–get bad grades, don’t get into college–creates,of course, significant anxiety. And that can make it harder to get the writing done.”

Then she and the people she’s helping move to more positive projects. She says usually when writing comes easily, the writers feel they have something important to say.The teacher advises thinking about who your audience is,and what it is that you really want to say to them.

1What does Jennifer Ahern-Dodson think of academic writing?

A. It is made up of past experiences. B. It has positive effects.

C. It is hard for everyone. D. It makes people think.

2Which can best explain the underlined words“hit a roadblock”in Paragraph 2?

A. Have an accident. B. Meet into trouble.

C. Break some record. D. Graduate from school.

3What can be the problem with academic writing?

A. Research subjects. B. Required styles.

C. A certain formula. D. Lack of patience.

4According to Jennifer, how can we improve writing?

A. By stopping worrying. B. By thinking positively.

【題目】How to Improve Speed Reading Skills

Speed reading is one of many skills that can improve your reading comprehension and shorten your study time. 1.

Look at groups of words, not single words.

2. However, if you can get into the habit of reading groups or chunks of words at one time, then you can read much faster. Start by trying to look at a group of three or four words at once, then work up to looking at an entire line of words. Focus on words that give the sentence meaning, such as the nouns and verbs and pay less attention to the filler words, such as “A, the, and, etc.”

Scan for keywords.

Scanning is a highly effective way of extracting answers from a text without really reading it. If you know exactly what you are looking fora name, a date, a statistic, or a specific wordyou can find it quickly by skipping over large chunks of the text. To scan, first visualize the word, number, or phrase you would like to find. 3. The information you are looking for should pop out at you.

4.

You can train yourself to read faster by timing yourself as you go. Start by getting your base time. Set a timer for fifteen minutes, and speed read as you normally do. 5. Do not count the words, just the pages or paragraphs. Record your figures: for instance, you might write “15min/6.5 pages.”

A. Then, run your eyes rapidly over the text

B. Race the clock

C. Check your comprehension

D. If you read a text one word at a time, then this will slow your reading speed way down

E. Here are some Speed Reading Techniques

F. One of the reasons you read slowly is that you have to pause sometimes to understand what a passage is saying

G. When the timer goes off, check to see how far you have got
