1broke down

2forgave, for

3puts on

4Bringing up

5twice thesize

6heavily burstintowhy

7spying ongetawaywith

1根據and wept. (1). broke (2). down

2根據for this was his first time to be late.

(1). puts (2). on

(1). Bringing (2). up

5倍數+thesize/height/length/width.

6shut是一個動詞,修飾動詞,用副詞,所以第一個空填heavily;burst into tears突然哭起來,其為固定短語,根據題干No one knew可知是發(fā)生在過去的事情,用一般過去時,所以填burst into_________ she was so angry and sad.knew的賓語,所以_________ she was so angry and sad.

7spy on的邏輯主語是Bill,它們之間是主動關系,所以用現(xiàn)在分詞作時間狀語,故填spying on;get away with逃避懲罰,該短語是一個固定短語,let sb. do sth.

3.倍數+ the +名詞 (size/length/width/height...)of...

4.倍數+ that + of …

7.double, triple, threefold, fourfold

8.倍數 as many/much + 名詞 + as + 被比較對象

I fondly remember road trips as a child, sitting in the sunny backseat of my mom's car, daydreaming about other worlds and fantastic adventures. As I’ve grown older, my daydreams have become increasingly occupied less with fantasy but more with the reality of my past and future. Nearly everyone daydreams about their future and reflects nostalgically (念舊地) or negatively on moments of the past. These moments can provide inspiration, but if you spend too much time daydreaming in this fashion, you may be reducing your success in the present.

If you've ever planned a vacation, you're familiar with the impatient days tapping at your desk, dreaming of the lazy, relaxing days to come. Unfortunately, sometimes you end up comparing the real vacation to your imagined one, and it doesn't live up to the standard. Reflecting nostalgically on the past can also prevent present enjoyment. It is equally fun to reflect on past achievements or fun events, but it's possible to be so consumed with happy memories that you miss opportunities to create more.

We've all made mistakes that we’re ashamed of;reflecting on them is an important step in correcting those mistakes and becoming a better person. But dwelling(細想)too long on your past can also be negative. If you dwell too long on a past mistake, you can begin to equate(使等同)yourself with your past and feel farther away from the person you want to be. Train your brain to think quickly about the past and future, and take only the information and inspiration that you need in order to be the best person you can without resting on your glory moments or your mistakes.

If your identity is not dependent on the past or future, every experience is new and every day is a blank page for you to write. A fun mental exercise is to always tell yourself that you’re experiencing things for the first time. So take advantage of each moment you’re given.

1What does the author think of daydreaming?

A. It's the favorite for many kids. B. It can lead to fantastic adventures.

C. It's the major source of inspiration. D. It has both strengths and weaknesses.

2What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

A. Past achievements strongly influence us.

B. It's important to be patient with our present life.

C. Daydreaming may make the present disappointing.

D. Reflecting nostalgically on the past brings us no pleasure.

3What should we avoid doing according to Paragraph 3?

A. Reflecting on the past. B. Resting on our past experiences.

C. Thinking about our past mistakes. D. Feeling ashamed of our past mistakes.

4What's the author's purpose in writing the text?

A. To tell about her childhood. B. To tell how to let go the past.

C. To suggest we focus on the present. D. To encourage us to learn from mistakes.

When a rather dirty, poorly-dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can't be no question that the world is full of terrible sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is coming from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.

Certainly, most of the world's great religions order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.

First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evils. Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one's sense of pride and self-dependence.

Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.

It is hard to come to a conclusion; there arc various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.

Before a child starts school, his or her main role models are his or her parent or caregiver. Parents or caregivers with high self-esteem( 自尊) typically model this to the children, who will gradually pick up these ideas. Those who are influenced by negativity(否定性,消極態(tài)度), even if the negativity is not towards them, will often take the same way of thinking, leading to low self-esteem in childhood.

Continual praise for a child’s achievements plays a large part in a child’s view of himself or herself. Praising a child for acting as expected or something good often encourages him or her to repeat the same action and forms a sense of self-worth. Empty praise, however, can have the opposite(相反的)effect. A child who is praised for anything will stop believing the words, and the empty praise will have little effect on self-esteem in childhood or possibly a negative effect.

Providing a child with responsibilities based on his or her abilities is also important in the development of self-esteem in childhood. Making a child feel like a helpful member of a family or group, whether at home or school, helps to form a higher sense of confidence in his or her abilities. However, giving a child unfit responsibilities or tasks can do no good to the development of high self-esteem in childhood.

Each person has strengths and weaknesses. A child can build up his or her confidence level when he/she is encouraged to take part in activities ,which can provide him or her with chances to work on weaknesses(缺點) in a helpful environment . Children who are given the opportunities to use their unique skills to help others or improve themselves have higher self-esteem than those who are not given the same chances or who are pushed into activities that they do not enjoy or do not have an ability to do.

Growing up on a small farm, I lived a life that I took for granted. My father worked in the city as a plumber(水暖工).He was not highly educated, but he was smart, looking at problems in an engineer’s way. He was a man made of leather, brass and chewing tobacco who tried to teach my brother and me useful things, including respect. He also had a temper and was strict with us for he would scold us when we made some careless mistakes. Sometimes, my father seemed like a distant enemy to me and I didn’t like him very much.

One day I came home from primary school and his car was already there. Once inside, I was told by my mother that he didn’t feel well. His back hurt. My father never missed work; in fact, when he came home, he went to the barn to work even more. I remember looking at him secretly around the corner as he lay on his bed in the middle of the day.

Later, my mother told me he got multiple myeloma(多發(fā)性骨髓瘤),a type of cancer. As the cancer grows, the person will shrink because the disease destroys the body’s energy and the abnormal antibodies cause problems for other cells and tissue. Bones eventually look like Swiss cheese, and when they break, they may never heal. But I didn’t realize that my father’s time was rather limited and just treated him the same way I used to.

For the last year of my fathers life, his entire day consisted df rising from his hospital bed in the living room and walking to his chair to sit and think. He was predictably in that chair when I came home one day during the ninth grade. I do not remember where my mother and brother were, but the two of us were alone.

Paragraph 1 :

He asked me to sit down and what he told me still moves me these decades Later.
